LADY PIRATES TO TAKE ON NORFOLK STATE ON ESPNU

Game Notes

HAMPTON, Va. –
The Hampton University women's basketball team will square off against Norfolk State in search of its 11th straight win on Monday at 4:30 p.m. at the HU Convocation Center. The game will be televised live on ESPNU.

The Lady Pirates (19-5, 10-0 MEAC) picked up their 10th straight win on Monday by beating Delaware State 75-56, thanks to 21 points from junior forward Alyssa Bennett (Hampton, Va.) and 20 points from senior forward Keiara Avant (Chesapeake, Va.).

Hampton is one win shy of its fourth straight 20-win season.

Norfolk State (5-17, 3-8 MEAC) has won back-to-back games after beating Maryland Eastern Shore 54-51 on Monday. Junior forward Rachel Gordon led the Spartans with 19 points and 12 rebounds, while sophomore forward Ebony Brown added 10 points.

The Spartans went 12-17 last season, finishing ninth in the MEAC with a 6-10 mark before falling to Hampton in the MEAC Tournament quarterfinals. Norfolk State, in its fourth season under head coach (and Hampton graduate) Debra Clark, returns four starters from last season and was picked to finish ninth in the MEAC in 2012-13.

Gordon leads the team in both scoring (11.0 per game) and rebounding (10.7 per contest), and she leads the MEAC in the latter category. She is also the only Spartan averaging in double figures in scoring.

Norfolk State is averaging just 54.0 points per game on offense, while giving up 65.1 points a contest.

Hampton is 50-32 all-time against Norfolk State, and the Lady Pirates have the last 14 meetings — including a 76-41 win in Norfolk, Va. on Jan. 26. The Spartans have not beaten the Lady Pirates since 2006, and Hampton is 21-12 against Norfolk State at home.

Since joining the MEAC in 1995-96, the Lady Pirates have won five regular-season and six tournament titles — including each of the last three under head coach David Six. Hampton has a winning record against every MEAC team.

Hampton's first regular-season MEAC title came in 1998-99, and the Lady Pirates first won the MEAC Tournament, and its corresponding NCAA bid, in 2000.

Under Six, the Lady Pirates are 36-6 at the HU Convocation Center over the past three-plus seasons — including a 9-1 record at home last season. Hampton's lone home loss last season came in overtime against Coppin State, 69-66 on Jan. 28.

Prior to that loss, the Lady Pirates had won 16 straight home games under Six. The Lady Pirates are 7-0 at home so far this season following a 75-56 win over Delaware State on Feb. 11.
