LADY PIRATES SET FOR GEORGIA TECH HOLIDAY TOURNEY

Game Notes

ATLANTA, Ga. –
The Hampton University women's basketball team, winners of four straight games, will compete in the Georgia Tech Holiday Tournament on Sunday and Monday at the McCamish Pavilion.

The Lady Pirates will face Brown on Sunday at 12 p.m., before taking on either Alabama State or the host Yellow Jackets on Monday at either 12 or 2 p.m.

Hampton (9-3) is coming off an 86-75 double-overtime win over Kansas State back on Dec. 21 – a game in which senior guard Nicole Hamilton (Hampton, Va.) and senior forward Alyssa Bennett (Hampton, Va.) each scored 24 points. Bennett added 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season.

Freshman guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas (Harrisburg, Pa.) added 19 points, while redshirt-sophomore forward Brielle Ward (Baltimore, Md.) grabbed 12 rebounds.

Hamilton was named MEAC Player of the Week, and Ward earned Defensive Player of the Week honors.

The Lady Pirates are 1-1 all-time against Alabama State, with the last meeting coming in 2006, and 0-1 against Brown, falling 86-71 on a neutral court back in 2005. Hampton is also 0-1 all-time against Georgia Tech, having fallen 63-54 on a neutral court in 2009.

In Six's four-plus seasons at the helm, the Lady Pirates have enjoyed success against the six so-called "power conferences:" the ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big XII, Pac-12, and SEC. After an 86-75 double-overtime win over Kansas State on Dec. 21, the Lady Pirates are 7-10 against teams in these six conferences — including a 1-1 mark this season.

Hampton was 3-3 against such teams last season, including wins over LSU, Mississippi State, and Boston College. During Six's tenure, Hampton boasts wins over LSU, Florida, Boston College, Pitt, and Kansas State — and the Lady Pirates took Kentucky to overtime in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in March 2011.

The Lady Pirates were 13-2 on the road last season, with their only road defeats being at Duke in the NCAA Tournament and at Virginia Tech. Under head coach David Six, the Lady Pirates are 45-17 in road games over the past four-plus seasons. The Lady Pirates are 18-9 on neutral courts in Six's tenure, including two wins earlier this season in winning the Cal State Northridge Thanksgiving Classic.

This will be Hampton's second tournament of the season.
