Game Notes
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Hampton University women's basketball team will head to Bender Arena on Sunday, set to take on American University at 4:30 p.m. in its 2012-13 non-conference finale.
The Lady Pirates (10-5) beat Boston College at the HU Convocation Center on Wednesday, thanks to a career-high 19 points from senior guard
Olivia Allen (Kildeer, Ill.) 18 points and seven rebounds from senior forward
Keiara Avant (Chesapeake, Va.), and 13 points from junior guard
Nicole Hamilton (Hampton, Va.).
American (7-6) fell 71-50 to Fordham on Friday. Junior guard Alexis Dobbs led the Eagles with nine points, while redshirt-junior guard Gelesia George came off the bench to add eight points.
The Eagles went 23-8 last season, winning the Patriot League regular-season title with a perfect 14-0 mark before advancing to the first round of the WNIT. American, in its fifth season under head coach Matt Corkery, returns two starters and seven letterwinners.
Sophomore guard Jen Dumiak is averaging 13.6 points per game to lead the Eagles, while Dobbs is the only other American player in double figures in scoring, averaging 11.5 points a contest. Senior center Stephanie Anya is the team's top rebounder, pulling down 4.4 boards per game.
American, which had its two-game winning streak snapped on Friday by a 71-50 loss to Fordham, is scoring 59.0 points a game, while giving up 61.2 points a night.
This will be the first-ever meeting between Hampton and American.
The Lady Pirates are 3-3 all-time against schools currently in the Patriot League. Hampton is 1-0 all-time against Army (also known as the U.S. Military Academy); 1-3 against Bucknell; and 1-0 against Lafayette College.
The Lady Pirates have never faced American, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lehigh, or the U.S. Naval Academy.
Under head coach
David Six, the Lady Pirates are 36-14 in road games — including a 13-3 mark away from the HU Convocation Center last season. Hampton's success on the road has been a large part of the team's recent dominance in the MEAC; the Lady Pirates were a perfect 8-0 in road conference games last season.
The Lady Pirates won their first six road games of the 2012-13 season, beating Southern Miss, Mississippi State, South Carolina State, Savannah State, UMBC, and Saint Peter's before falling at Virginia Tech on Dec. 30.
