LADY PIRATES LOOK TO EXTEND WINNING STREAK AT NORFOLK STATE

Game Notes

NORFOLK, Va. –
The Hampton University women's basketball team will look for its sixth straight win on Saturday, crossing the James River to take on rival Norfolk State at 4 p.m. in Echols Hall.

The Lady Pirates (14-5, 5-0 MEAC) beat Coppin State at home 58-50 on Monday, thanks to a career-high 22 points on 9-for-15 shooting from senior guard Olivia Allen (Kildeer, Ill.). Senior forward Keiara Avant (Chesapeake, Va.) added 14 points and 10 rebounds for her 11th double-double of the season.

Norfolk State (3-14, 1-5 MEAC) picked up its first conference win of the season on Monday with an 82-68 win over Morgan State, snapping a six-game losing streak. Junior forward Aivah Parham led the Spartans with 34 points and 12 rebounds, while junior forward Rachel Gordon added 25 points and 12 rebounds.

The Spartans went 12-17 last season, finishing ninth in the MEAC with a 6-10 mark before falling to Hampton in the MEAC Tournament quarterfinals. Norfolk State, in its fourth season under head coach (and Hampton graduate) Debra Clark, returns four starters from last season and was picked to finish ninth in the MEAC in 2012-13.

Gordon leads the team in both scoring (10.1 per game) and rebounding (11.3 per contest), and she leads the MEAC in the latter category. Junior guard Rae Corbo is the only other Spartan in double figures in scoring this season, averaging 10.0 points per game.

Norfolk State is averaging just 55.1 points per game on offense, while giving up 65.8 points a contest.

Hampton is 49-32 all-time against Norfolk State, and the Lady Pirates have the last 13 meetings — including all three last season. The Spartans have not beaten the Lady Pirates since 2006, and Hampton is 19-15 against Norfolk State on the road.

Since joining the MEAC in 1995-96, the Lady Pirates have won five regular-season and six tournament titles — including each of the last three under head coach David Six. Hampton has a winning record against every MEAC team.

Hampton's first regular-season MEAC title came in 1998-99, and the Lady Pirates first won the MEAC Tournament, and its corresponding NCAA bid, in 2000.

Under Six, the Lady Pirates are 38-14 in road games — including a 13-3 mark away from the HU Convocation Center last season. Hampton's success on the road has been a large part of the team's recent dominance in the MEAC; the Lady Pirates were a perfect 8-0 in road conference games last season.

The Lady Pirates are 8-1 on the road so far this season, with that lone loss coming at Virginia Tech on Dec. 30.
