HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University women's basketball team picked up its fifth straight win on Monday, as a career night from senior
Olivia Allen propelled the Lady Pirates to a 58-50 win over Coppin State at the HU Convocation Center.
Allen (Kildeer, Ill.) came off the bench to score a game- and career-high 22 points on 9-for-15 shooting, while senior forward
Keiara Avant (Chesapeake, Va.) recorded her 11th double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Junior guard
Nicole Hamilton (Hampton, Va.) added 12 points, while junior forward
Alyssa Bennett (Hampton, Va.) grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds.
Allen had 15 points in the first half alone.
The Lady Pirates (14-5, 5-0 MEAC) jumped out to a 12-6 lead with 14:23 left in the first half after Allen hit a pair of free throws, and a free throw from Hamilton gave Hampton a 13-6 lead at the 13:55 mark.
Coppin State responded with a 9-2 run to tie the game at 15-15 with 8:21 left in the half after a Leola Spotwood layup, but the Lady Pirates answered with a 10-0 run of their own, going up 25-15 after a Hamilton tip-in with 4:33 left in the half.
Shawntae Payne cut that lead to 29-25 with a layup at the 1:47 mark, but Hampton closed the half with seven unanswered points, going into the locker room with a 36-25 lead after Avant sank a layup as time expired.
A Hamilton 3-pointer with 12:00 left in the second half gave the Lady Pirates a 41-26 lead, as Coppin State struggled to get going offensively in the later frame; in fact, the Lady Eagles would not hit their first field goal of the second half until a Kyra Coleman jumper at the 9:40 mark cut Hampton's lead to 43-33.
Prior to that basket, Coppin State had to settle for six points from the free throw line.
Bennett gave Hampton a 48-35 lead at the 7:01 mark with a jumper, before Coppin State went on a 7-1 run to cut the lead to 49-42 after Amber Griffin hit two free throws with 5:54 left to play.
A 9-2 Hampton run put the Lady Pirates up 58-44 with 3:20 to play after Avant converted a 3-point play in what would be the final points of the night for the Lady Pirates. Coppin State scored the game's final six points, but could not muster enough of a comeback.
In fact, Coppin State only had eight field goals in the second half, shooting 27.6 percent from the floor in the final 20 minutes.
The Lady Pirates shot 34.4 percent (22-for-64) from the floor, hitting three of their 12 3-pointers (25.0 percent) and 11 of their 21 free throws (52.4 percent). Hampton held a 48-40 advantage on the glass, and the Lady Pirates outscored Coppin State 32-20 in the paint.
Coppin State (7-12, 3-3 MEAC), which had its three-game winning streak snapped, shot just 30.5 percent (18-for-59) from the floor and made just one of its seven 3-point attempts.
Larrisa Carter led the Lady Eagles with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
