LADY PIRATES SET TO TAKE ON BETHUNE-COOKMAN

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. –
The Hampton University women's basketball team will hit the historic Moore Gymnasium on Monday evening, when the Lady Pirates square off against Bethune-Cookman at 5:30 p.m.

The Lady Pirates (21-4, 13-1 MEAC) took control of the MEAC regular-season title race on Saturday with a 46-43 win at Florida A&M. It was Hampton's sixth straight win overall and its sixth consecutive win on the road. Junior forward Keiara Avant (Chesapeake, Va.) led the way with 18 points and a career-high-tying 17 rebounds.

Senior guard Choicetta McMillian (Fairfield, Texas), after scoring six points on Saturday, is just 18 points from becoming the 23rd Lady Pirate in history to reach 1,000 career points.

Bethune-Cookman (10-16, 7-7 MEAC) has won three straight games after Saturday's 83-73 win over Norfolk State. Redshirt-senior guard Demetria Frank led the Lady Wildcats with 25 points, while junior guard Jasmine Elum added 24 points and redshirt-senior guard Jalisa Isaac poured in 19 points.

Bethune-Cookman went 13-17 last season, finishing ninth in the MEAC with a mark of 5-11. The Lady Wildcats, under fourth-year head coach Vanessa Blair, return three starters and five letterwinners from last year and were picked to finish seventh in the MEAC this season.

Elum is the team's leading scorer, pouring in 13.6 points per game, while Frank is averaging 12.8 points per game to go along with a team-high 6.5 rebounds per contest.

The Lady Wildcats are scoring just 57.4 points per game, while giving up just 62.9 points a contest.

Hampton is 20-7 all-time against Bethune-Cookman, having won seven of the last nine meetings between the two teams — despite splitting last season's meetings. The Lady Wildcats last defeated Hampton on Jan. 22 of last season, 55-51 in Daytona Beach, Fla.

The Lady Pirates are 273-136 all-time against teams currently in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). Hampton has a winning record against every MEAC school. In addition, Hampton has won or shared regular-season MEAC titles four times (1998-99, 2002-03, 2003-04, 2010-11) and claimed five MEAC Tournament crowns (2000, 2003, 2004, 2010, 2011).

Under head coach David Six, the Lady Pirates are a combined 28-13 in road games over the past two-plus seasons — including a 60-37 win at Pitt, a 68-55 win at Jacksonville, a 79-62 win at IPFW, a 66-39 win at Chicago State, a 71-63 win at Boston College, a 76-50 win at Coppin State, an 83-51 win at Morgan State, a 52-39 win at Howard, a 72-33 win at Delaware State, a 68-46 win at Norfolk State and a 46-43 win at Florida A&M.

Hampton went 11-4 on the road last season, including a stretch in which Hampton won five straight road games. Hampton went 6-6 on the road in 2009-10, Six's first season at the helm.
