LADY PIRATES TAKE ON FLORIDA A&M IN BATTLE FOR FIRST PLACE

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –
The Hampton University women's basketball team will square off against Florida A&M on Saturday at the Alfred Lawson Jr. Center at 4 p.m., with first place in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) on the line.

The Lady Pirates (20-4, 12-1 MEAC) picked up their fifth straight win on Monday, defeating Delaware State 71-44 in their home finale. Sophomore guard Nicole Hamilton (Hampton, Va.) and junior forward Keiara Avant (Chesapeake, Va.) each led the way with 14 points, while senior guard Choicetta McMillian (Fairfield, Texas) added 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Hampton has won 20 straight games for the third straight season – a first in Division I program history.

Florida A&M (19-6, 12-1 MEAC) has won two straight and 18 of its last 20 after defeating South Carolina State 75-69 on Monday. Sophomore guard Kimberly Sparkman led the way with 19 points, while sophomore guard Jasmine Grice and freshman forward/center Kabrina Merriweather each had 11 points.

Florida A&M went 15-15 last season, finishing fifth in the MEAC with a mark of 9-7. The Lady Ratlers, in their fourth year under head coach LeDawn Gibson, return three starters and five letterwinners from last year, and were picked to finish fourth in the MEAC this season.

Senior guard/forward Antonia Bennett leads the team and the MEAC in scoring, pouring in 18.5 points a contest to go along with a team-high 9.5 rebounds a game, while senior guard Tameka McKelton is averaging 13.6 points a night. Senior center/forward Qiana Donald is averaging 11.6 points a game, while Sparkman is chipping in 10.9 points a contest.

The Lady Rattlers are scoring 72.2 points per game, while giving up just 63.9 points a contest.

Hampton is 20-10 all-time against Florida A&M, having won the five meetings between the two teams and eight of the last nine — including both of last season's meetings. Florida A&M last defeated Hampton on Jan. 12, 2009, when the Lady Rattlers won 68-59 in Tallahassee, Fla. Hampton is 6-5 all-time against Florida A&M in Tallahassee, Fla.

The Lady Pirates are 272-136 all-time against teams currently in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). Hampton has a winning record against every MEAC school. In addition, Hampton has won or shared regular-season MEAC titles four times (1998-99, 2002-03, 2003-04, 2010-11) and claimed five MEAC Tournament crowns (2000, 2003, 2004, 2010, 2011).

Under head coach David Six, the Lady Pirates are a combined 27-13 in road games over the past two-plus seasons — including a 60-37 win at Pitt, a 68-55 win at Jacksonville, a 79-62 win at IPFW, a 66-39 win at Chicago State, a 71-63 win at Boston College, a 76-50 win at Coppin State, an 83-51 win at Morgan State, a 52-39 win at Howard, a 72-33 win at Delaware State and a 68-46 win at Norfolk State.

Hampton went 11-4 on the road last season, including a stretch in which Hampton won five straight road games. Hampton went 6-6 on the road in 2009-10, Six's first season at the helm.
