LADY PIRATES REBOUND WITH WIN OVER MORGAN STATE

HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University women's basketball team rebounded in a big way on Monday, upending Morgan State 74-60 at the HU Convocation Center in front of a national ESPNU audience.

The Lady Pirates (16-4, 8-1 MEAC) have not lost back-to-back games since November of last season.

Senior guard Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas) led the Lady Pirates with 25 points on 8-for-16 shooting and eight assists, while senior forward Melanie Warner (Tallahassee, Fla.) added a season-high 20 points on 7-for-12 shooting.

Senior guard Choicetta McMillian (Fairfield, Texas) pulled down a team- and career-high 13 rebounds, while junior forward Keiara Avant (Chesapeake, Va.) came off the bench to add seven points and 10 rebounds.

Warner scored the first seven points for Hampton, including a 3-pointer at the 17:01 mark that put the Lady Pirates up 7-3.

The Lady Pirates never trailed, though Morgan State clawed within one at the 12:55 mark of the first half, when DeKeisha Mathis hit a 3-pointer to cut Hampton's lead to 13-12. Hampton then scored six straight, going up 18-12 at the 11:44 mark on a pair of Jenkins free throws.

Morgan State closed within two, 20-18, on an Omara Parker jumper with 7:10 left in the half, but the Lady Pirates went on a 14-2 run to take a 34-20 lead with 1:52 left in the half on a Jenkins jumper.

The Lady Pirates led 36-23 at the break.

The Lady Bears hung tough in the second half, and closed Hampton's lead to six with 4:38 to play, when Moneisha Davis sank a layup to cut Hampton's lead to 62-56, capping a 7-3 Morgan State run. Jenkins hit two free throws with 4:15 to play to bring the lead back to 64-56, before adding a jumper at the 3:23 mark to put Hampton back up by 10.

The Lady Pirates led by double digits the rest of the way, as Morgan State had just two field goals in the final 4:38 of the game.

The Lady Pirates shot 36.1 percent (26-for-72) from the floor, hitting six of their 26 3-pointers and 16 of their 20 free throws. Hampton forced Morgan State into 20 turnovers, scoring 32 points off of them, and held a 45-38 edge on the glass.

Hampton is undefeated this season when out-rebounding its opponent.

Morgan State (6-15, 3-5 MEAC) shot 40.0 percent (24-for-60) from the floor and was held to just eight field goals in the first half. The Lady Bears went 8-for-22 (36.4 percent) from behind the arc and made four of their six free throws.

Parker led Morgan State with 20 points, while Mathis added 16 points and Keirah Hicks poured in 12.
