HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University women's basketball team had its six-game winning streak snapped on Saturday at the HU Convocation Center, as Coppin State escaped with a 69-66 win in overtime.
The Lady Pirates (15-4, 7-1 MEAC) also had their 16-game home winning streak snapped, as well as their string of 20 straight wins over MEAC opponents. This was Hampton's first loss at the Convocation Center since a 49-42 defeat to Jacksonville on Nov. 27, 2010.
Senior guard
Choicetta McMillian (Fairfield, Texas) led the Lady Pirates with 25 points, despite going just 7-for-22 from the floor, while senior guard
Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas) added 17 points and nine assists.
Senior forward
Melanie Warner (Tallahassee, Fla.) added 10 points to go along with her career-high 21 rebounds. Her total is also tied for the second-most in a single game in program history, matching the 21 boards Anita Cooper grabbed against Elizabeth City State in 1984.
Warner gave the Lady Pirates a 57-55 lead with 2:25 left in the second half, before Shawntae Payne pulled Coppin State within one, 57-56, with a free throw at the 2:10 mark. Jeanine Manley then had a chance to give the Lady Eagles the lead with 42 seconds left in regulation, but she only made one free throw to tie the game.
Manley also had a shot at the win with six seconds left in regulation, but her shot went wide.
There were 10 ties and 10 lead changes in the second half.
Manley went on to score the first four points of overtime, giving Coppin State at 61-57 lead with 3:35 left before Jenkins hit a pair of free throws at the 3:22 mark to cut the lead to two.
Jenkins then hit a layup with 21 seconds left to pull the Lady Pirates within two again, 66-64, before Crystal Whittington scored on a breakaway layup three seconds later and Larrisa Carter hit a free throw with 10 seconds left to clinch the win.
Coppin State jumped to a 6-0 lead to open the game, starting with a pair of basket from Whittington before Carter hit a layup at the 16:21 mark. Hampton first got on the board with 15:59 left in the first half when Jenkins sank a 3-pointer.
A McMillian trey with 14:49 left in the half tied the game at 8-8, before Jenkins capped a 10-2 run with a jumper at the 14:29 mark to give the Lady Pirates their first lead of the night.
After sophomore guard
Nicole Hamilton (Hampton, Va.) hit a pair of free throws at the 12:58 mark to give Hampton an 18-10 lead, Coppin State scored six unanswered points, closing to 18-16 after a Manley layup with 10:44 left in the half.
The Lady Pirates answered with a 10-0 run, going up 28-16 at the 6:11 mark after a layup from junior forward
Keiara Avant (Chesapeake, Va.). An Avant free throw at the 4:39 mark pushed Hampton's lead to 30-18.
Coppin State closed the half on an 8-2 run to cut Hampton's lead to 32-26 at the half.
Hampton shot just 27.2 percent (22-for-81) from the floor on the night, while going just 9-for-37 (24.3 percent) from behind the arc and making 13 of its 19 free throws. The Lady Pirates turned Coppin State over 24 times, resulting in 21 points.
Coppin State (11-10, 6-2 MEAC) shot 37.0 percent (20-for-54) from the floor and went to the free throw 44 times, converting 28 times (63.6 percent). The Lady Eagles held a 32-18 edge in the paint and scored 18 points off 20 Hampton turnovers.
Both teams pulled down 52 rebounds.
Whitington and Carter each had 15 points for Coppin State, while Manley added 12 points.
The Lady Pirates will return to action on Monday, when they take on Morgan State at the HU Convocation Center at 4:30 p.m. The game will be televised live on ESPNU.
