HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University women's basketball team won its fifth straight game on Saturday, as the Lady Pirates upended rival Norfolk State 92-43 at the HU Convocation Center.
The Lady Pirates (14-3, 6-0 MEAC) have also won 16 straight at home and 19 in a row over conference foes – not to mention their 11th straight over the Spartans. Hampton also set a new season high in points scored and came within one 3-pointer of tying the program record for treys in a game.
Senior guard
Choicetta McMillian (Fairfield, Texas) and sophomore guard
Nicole Hamilton (Hampton, Va.) each led Hampton with 16 points, while junior forward
Keiara Avant (Chesapeake, Va.) added 14 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Sophomore forward
Alyssa Bennett (Hampton, Va.) poured in 13 points.
Senior guard
Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas) scored 12 points to go along with a career-high-tying 17 assists. Junior forward
Ariel Phelps (Virginia Beach, Va.) added 10 rebounds off the bench.
Norfolk State opened the game with four straight points thanks to Batavia Owens, going up 4-0 at the 18:43 mark. Hampton answered with a 10-0 run, going up 10-4 with 13:10 left in the half after Phelps made one of two free throws.
Norfolk State went nearly six minutes between field goals during that run.
The Spartans (8-10, 3-4 MEAC) then went on a 9-2 to take a 13-12 lead at the 8:29 mark after Rachel Gordon hit a pair of free throws. Phelps gave the Lady Pirates the lead again at the 8:11 mark with a jumper, starting a run of eight unanswered points for the Lady Pirates.
Rae Corbo converted a 3-point play at the 5:16 mark to cut Hampton's lead to 26-19, before the Lady Pirates closed the first half on a 13-2 run to head into the locker room up 39-21.
Hamilton led Hampton at the half with 11 points off the bench, as the Lady Pirates shot 38.9 percent (14-for-36) from the floor and hit six of their 23 first-half 3-pointers. Hampton also held Norfolk State to 22.6 percent shooting (7-for-31) and forced nine Spartan turnovers in the opening 20 minutes.
Norfolk State did not score a field goal in the second half until the 8:58, and the Spartans only had five field goals in the second half. Meanwhile, Hampton opened the second half with an offensive barrage, hitting three straight 3-pointers – going up 48-21 after Avant nailed a trey at the 18:07 mark.
Avant hit another 3-pointer with 11:23 to play to put Hampton up 63-26, before Jenkins added a layup at the 10:38 mark to grow the lead to 65-26. Phelps and Avant added baskets of their own, and the Lady Pirates led 69-26 at the 9:39 mark.
Hamilton sank a layup with 8:36 to play to put Hampton up 71-28.
The Lady Pirates led by as many as 52, going up 92-40 with 1:08 to play after junior guard
Olivia Allen (Kildeer, Ill.) hit a pair of free throws.
Hampton went 33-for-75 (44.0 percent) from the floor, hitting 12 of its 35 3-pointers to go 37.1 percent from behind the arc. The Lady Pirates also hit 13 of their 16 free throws, while also out-rebounding the Spartans 44-39.
The Lady Pirates also turned Norfolk State over 25 times, scoring 32 points off those miscues; Hampton committed just six turnovers on the night, a season low.
The Spartans shot just 25.0 percent (12-for-48) from the floor.
Corbo led Norfolk State with 19 points.
