HAMPTON, Va. – Several members of the Hampton University women's basketball team had career nights on Saturday, as the Lady Pirates defeated South Carolina State 77-57 at the HU Convocation Center for their fourth straight win.
Senior forward
Quanneisha Perry (Decatur, Ga.) recorded her eighth double-double of the season with a team-high 25 points and 16 rebounds, while junior guard
Choicetta McMillian (Fairfield, Texas) scored a career-high 22 points behind six 3-pointers.
Sophomore forward
Keiara Avant (Chesapeake, Va.) added a career-high 11 points, while junior center
Sherena Abercrumbia (Dallas, Texas) tied her career high with eight points.
Junior guard
Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas) dished out a career-high 17 assists; she sits second in school history for most assists in a game, behind the 20 assists Jackie Wyche dished out in 1986 against Virginia Union.
She set the school's Div. I record for assists in a game.
The Lady Bulldogs opened the second half on an 11-2 run to cut Hampton's lead to 37-28 at the 16:46 mark of the second half after a Tiara Knotts 3-pointer, but the Lady Pirates scored eight unanswered points to go up 46-28 after an Abercrumbia layup with 14:20 to play.
McMillian hit her sixth trey of the night with 8:47 to play, capping a 22-9 run to give the Lady Pirates a 62-37 lead.
The Lady Pirates shot 40.6 percent (26-for-64) from the floor, while also making 17 of 20 free throws. Hampton (16-6, 9-1 MEAC) also out-rebounded SCSU 47-32.
SCSU (6-13, 2-7 MEAC) shot 40.4 percent (21-for-52) from the floor in its seventh straight loss, turning the ball over 19 times. Whitney Wiley led the Lady Bulldogs with 21 points on 7-for-16 shooting.
For the third straight game, the Lady Pirates held their opponent under 20 points at the half, taking a 35-17 lead into the intermission. SCSU actually took an 8-7 lead with 14:33 left in the half on a Tracey Flowers layup, but the Lady Pirates ended the half on a 28-9 run. The Lady Bulldogs went the last 14:33 of the half with just two field goals.
Perry hit a jumper with 4:06 left in the half to put Hampton up 28-12, its largest lead of the half.
McMillian led the Lady Pirates with 14 points in the first half, hitting four of her eight 3-pointers, while Perry added 12 points to go with a team-high seven rebounds. The Lady Pirates shot 39.4 percent (13-for-33) from the floor in the first half, while also out-rebounding the Lady Bulldogs 26-13.
Flowers led SCSU with six first-half points.
