LADY PIRATES SNAP A&T’S HOME COURT WIN STREAK

The Hampton University women's basketball team picked up its seventh straight win on Monday, defeating North Carolina A&T 74-66 at the Corbett Sports Center in front of a national ESPNU audience.

With the win, the Lady Pirates (19-6, 11-1 MEAC) snapped North Carolina A&T's 30-game home winning streak and came within one win of their second straight 20-win season. Hampton went 20-12 last season.

It also marked the first time Hampton swept the season series with A&T since 2005.

Junior guard Choicetta McMillian (Fairfield, Texas) led four Lady Pirates in double figures with a career-high 22 points on 5-for-11 3-point shooting. Junior guard Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas) scored 15 points to go along with a team-high five assists, while sophomore forward Keiara Avant (Chesapeake, Va.) added 14 points and junior forward Melanie Warner (Tallahassee, Fla.) scored 13 points.

Senior guard Laura Lewis (Dallas, Texas) pulled down a team-high nine rebounds, while senior forward Quanneisha Perry (Decatur, Ga.) added eight boards.

Tracy King hit a jumper with 16:51 left in the game to pull the Lady Aggies to within one, 35-34, before the Lady Pirates answered with a 7-2 run to go up 42-36 with 13:18 to play after Avant converted a 3-point play.

A McMillian trey with 12:05 left put Hampton up 51-39, the Lady Pirates' largest lead of the half, but a 14-1 A&T run gave the Lady Aggies a 53-52 lead with 8:29 to play.

After Mikala Scott tied the game at 61-61 with 3:55 to play with a pair of free throws, the Lady Pirates closed with a 13-5 run. Jenkins kicked off the run with a layup, and Hampton went 8-for-12 from the free throw line down the stretch.

Hampton shot 35.4 percent (23-for-65) from the floor, making seven of 21 3-point shots. The Lady Pirates held a 47-40 rebounding edge, and Hampton's bench out-scored the Lady Aggies 29-21.

Hampton also held a 24-11 edge in second-chance points, thanks to 22 offensive rebounds.

The Lady Aggies shot 41.7 percent (25-for-60) from the floor, but turned the ball over 17 times. Jaquayla Berry led the way with 26 points, while Scott added 11 points and King poured in 10 points to go along with 10 rebounds.

After the Lady Aggies (11-12, 7-5 MEAC) opened the game with a 4-0 lead, the Lady Pirates went on a 13-2 run, punctuated at the 14:00 mark by a McMillian layup. She would add a layup at the 7:43 mark to put the Lady Pirates up 28-11, their largest lead of the first half.

A&T closed the half on a 13-3 run to head into the half down 31-24.

McMillian led the Lady Pirates with 10 points at the half, though Hampton shot just 29.4 percent (10-for-34) in the opening 20 minutes. Hampton did force 11 Lady Aggie turnovers, converting them into 12 points.

The Lady Pirates will return to the HU Convocation Center on Saturday for a 4 p.m. match-up against Bethune-Cookman, the only MEAC team to beat Hampton so far this season.
