LADY PIRATES CRUISE PAST NORFOLK STATE

NORFOLK, Va. –
The Hampton University women's basketball team won its sixth straight game on Saturday, running past Norfolk State 74-53 at Echols Hall.

The Lady Pirates (18-6, 10-1 MEAC) have now won 10 straight over Norfolk State and have swept the season series.

Junior guard Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas) led the Lady Pirates with 22 points and nine assists, going 9-for-10 from the free throw line, while junior guard Choicetta McMillian (Fairfield, Texas) scored 20 points behind six 3-pointers.

Junior forward Melanie Warner (Tallahassee, Fla.) added 10 points.

McMillian sank a 3-pointer with 15:00 to play to give the Lady Pirates a 59-35 lead, before sophomore forward Keiara Avant (Chesapeake, Va.) and Warner each sank a layup to bring that lead to 64-38. NSU (8-13, 1-10 MEAC) went on a 7-0 run to cut Hampton's lead to 64-45 at the 8:53 mark, but the Lady Spartans could never get back into the game.

The Lady Pirates shot 46.9 percent (23-for-49) from the floor, while making 20 of 28 free throws and eight of 16 3-pointers. Hampton forced the Lady Spartans into 28 turnovers, scoring 22 points off of them.

NSU shot 45.7 percent (21-for-46) from the floor and out-rebounded the Lady Pirates 29-28.

Marian Brooks led NSU with 11 points.

Genor Dalton sank a layup with 7:53 left in the first half to cut Hampton's lead to 23-21, but the Lady Pirates closed the first half on a 21-8 run to take a 44-29 lead into the break. The Lady Pirates opened the run with nine unanswered points, including 3-pointers from senior guard Laura Lewis (Dallas, Texas) and McMillian.

Jenkins led all scorers with 16 first-half points, going 4-for-4 from the floor, 1-for-1 from behind the arc and 7-for-8 from the free throw line. She also had five assists and three steals in the first half.

Brooks led the Lady Spartans with seven first-half points.

The Lady Pirates will return to action on Monday, when they head to Greensboro, N.C. to take on North Carolina A&T at 4:30 p.m. in the Corbett Sports Center. The game will be televised live on ESPNU.
