WAKE FOREST SNAPS LADY PIRATES’ WINNING STREAK

The Hampton University women's basketball team saw its seven-game winning streak snapped Thursday night, as Wake Forest beat the Lady Pirates 62-49 at the Lawrence Joel Coliseum.

Senior forward Quanneisha Perry (Decatur, Ga.) scored 14 points in the loss, becoming the 21st player in program history to score 1,000 career points. She now has 1,006 points for her career.

Freshman guard Nicole Hamilton (Hampton, Va. ), in her third career game, led the Lady Pirates (8-5) with 15 points on 6-for-12 shooting. Junior guard Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas) added a team-high four assists to eight points on 3-for-13 shooting.

Junior guard Choicetta McMillian (Fairfield, Texas) pulled down a team-high six rebounds.

Hamilton hit a 3-pointer with 10:55 left in the first half to give Hampton a 7-4 lead, and the Lady Pirates went on to take a 15-12 lead with 6:12 left in the half on a trey from McMillian. Consecutive 3-pointers by Sandra Garcia gave Wake Forest (9-7) an 18-15 lead with 4:47 left in the first half.

Garcia added a fast-break layup to give the Demon Deacons a 20-15 edge.

Wake Forest took a 26-23 lead into the half, before stretching the lead to 10 points, 41-31, with 13:58 left in the game on a Mykala Walker layup. Hampton went on a 12-5 run, pulling the score to 46-43 in favor of the Demon Deacons with 9:11 to play on a Perry layup.

After Wake Forest took a 49-43 lead on three free throws, Hamilton again cut the deficit to three with a jumper at the 5:20 mark. Wake Forest closed the game on a 13-2 run, as Hamilton's jumper was Hampton's last field goal of the night.

The Lady Pirates shot 34.0 percent (18-for-53) from the floor, making just four of 13 3-point attempts. Wake Forest shot 40.4 percent (21-for-52) from the floor and made 18 of 20 free throws as a team. The Demon Deacons also held a 41-28 rebounding edge.

Wake Forest out-scored Hampton 25-17 off the bench.

Brittany Waters led three Demon Deacons in double figures with 15 points to go along with a team-high 11 rebounds. Garcia added 12 points off the bench, while Secily Ray scored 10 points.
