HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University women's basketball team will look to remain undefeated in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play on Monday, taking on North Carolina A&T at the HU Convocation Center at 6 p.m.
The Lady Pirates (11-5, 4-0 MEAC), in their second season under head coach
David Six, won their third straight game in convincing fashion on Saturday, as they beat Norfolk State 75-54 at the HU Convocation Center. Freshman guard
Nicole Hamilton (Hampton, Va. ) led four Lady Pirates in double figures with 16 points, while junior forward
Melanie Warner (Tallahassee, Fla.) came off the bench to score 15 points and grab six rebounds. Junior guard
Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas) added 11 points and a team-high nine assists, while senior forward
Quanneisha Perry (Decatur, Ga.) scored 10 points and pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season.
North Carolina A&T (6-8, 3-1 MEAC) had its two-game winning streak snapped by Howard on Saturday, falling 69-53 at the Burr Gymnasium. Freshman guard Mikala Scott led three Lady Aggies in double figures with 21 points, while sophomore guard Jaquayla Berry and Reisha Bullock each poured in 10 points in North Carolina A&T's first conference loss of the season.
Hampton is 18-13 all-time against North Carolina A&T, though the Lady Aggies have won 10 of the last 12 meetings. The Lady Pirates snapped North Carolina A&T's five-game winning streak in the series last season, winning 90-80 at the HU Convocation Center on Feb. 15, 2010 to hand the Lady Aggies their first MEAC loss of the season. From 1998-2005, Hampton won 16 straight games against North Carolina A&T. The Lady Pirates are 10-5 against the Lady Aggies at the HU Convocation Center.
The Lady Aggies went 23-11 last season, winning the MEAC regular season crown with a 14-2 conference mark before advancing to the third round of the WNIT – beating Wake Forest and Charlotte along the way. In returning four starters and six letterwinners this season, including Preseason Second Team selection senior guard/forward Jaleesa Sams, North Carolina A&T was picked to finish second in the MEAC this season.
Sams leads the team in scoring so far this season, pouring in 15.0 points per game while also pulling down 6.2 rebounds per contest – the second-most on the team. Berry, who leads the Lady Aggies in rebounding with 7.4 boards per game, is second in scoring with 10.8 points a night.
North Carolina A&T is averaging just 65.6 points per game on offense, while the defense is giving up 73.9 points a game.
After beating Norfolk State 75-54 on Saturday, the Lady Pirates are 4-2 at the HU Convocation Center so far this season. The Lady Pirates were 10-3 at the HU Convocation Center last season, winning their last seven home contests. Hampton went 7-1 at home in MEAC games last season, and Six is 14-5 in his career as a head coach at home.
