LADY PIRATES CRUISE PAST NORFOLK STATE

HAMPTON, Va. –
The Hampton University women's basketball team picked up its third straight win on Saturday, beating Norfolk State 75-54 at the HU Convocation Center to stay undefeated in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play.

Freshman guard Nicole Hamilton (Hampton, Va. ) led four Lady Pirates in double figures with 16 points, while junior forward Melanie Warner (Tallahassee, Fla.) came off the bench to score 15 points and grab six rebounds.

Junior guard Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas) added 11 points and a team-high nine assists, while senior forward Quanneisha Perry (Decatur, Ga.) scored 10 points to go along with a team-high 10 rebounds.

After Marian Brooks sank a layup with 16:03 to cut Hampton's lead to 45-33, the Lady Pirates (11-5, 4-0 MEAC) went on a 14-4 run over the next 13 minutes, taking a 67-43 lead on a layup from junior guard Choicetta McMillian (Fairfield, Texas) at the 3:59 mark.

A Jenkins 3-point play with 3:07 to play gave Hampton a 71-47 lead.

The Lady Pirates shot 48.3 percent (28-for-58) from the floor, outscoring Norfolk State 40-30 in the paint. Hampton also held a 41-34 rebounding edge, while also forcing 20 Spartan turnovers and converting them into 23 points.

Norfolk State (6-7, 0-4 MEAC) shot 42.1 percent (24-for-57) from the floor, missing all three of its 3-point attempts. Brooks and Sarah Daily led the Spartans with 12 points each, while Rachel Gordon added 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Hampton took a 38-26 lead into the half, thanks largely to 15-for-28 (53.6 percent) shooting in the opening frame. The Lady Pirates also out-rebounded Norfolk State 20-11 in the first half, scoring 15 points off of 11 Spartan turnovers.

Warner led the Lady Pirates with 10 first-half points, while Hamilton added nine points. After Brooks hit a free throw to cut Hampton's lead to 4-3 at the 15:30 mark of the first half, the Lady Pirates went on a 14-0 run, taking an 18-3 lead on a Warner layup with 11:18 left in the half.

Norfolk State went nearly seven minutes without a field goal in the first half.
