DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The Hampton University women's basketball team (14-10, 9-3 MEAC) will hit the road again to take on the Lady Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman (12-11, 7-4 MEAC) at Moore Gymnasium on Saturday at 2 p.m.
The Lady Pirates made it eight in a row against the Lady Aggies of North Carolina A&T, winning 90-80 on Monday evening at the HU Convocation Center. The Lady Pirates were led in points and assists by sophomore sensation
Bernadette Fortune with 30 points and 11 assists – both career highs.
Choicetta McMillian had a career high with 18 points, while
Jericka Jenkins had 17 points, a team-high eight rebounds and four assists.
This was the first time the Lady Pirates have scored 90 points in a game since Feb. 6, 2003, when they beat UMES 93-64.The Lady Pirates were scorching the nets, shooting season-highs from the floor (52.6 percent) and 3-point line (58.8 percent). The Lady Pirates were very unselfish, with a season-high 20 assists Monday night.
The Lady Pirates are 18-5 all-time against Bethune-Cookman following this year's 81-44 win at the HU Convocation Center on Jan. 23. Hampton has won five straight games against the Lady Wildcats, dating back to Jan. 6, 2007. The last time Bethune-Cookman beat Hampton was Jan. 3, 2006, when the Lady Wildcats beat Hampton 77-71 at Moore Gymnasium. Hampton won the first-ever meeting between the two teams on Jan. 2, 1997, 73-67 at the HU Convocation Center. From 1999-2003, the Lady Pirates won six straight over Bethune-Cookman. Hampton is 6-5 all-time against Bethune-Cookman at Moore Gymnasium.
The Bethune-Cookman women's basketball team is coached by Vanessa Inge. The Lady Wildcats went 12-17 last season and 4-12 in conference play. The Lady Wildcats were projected to finish ninth in the MEAC in 2009-10. Junior center Sarah Bolden was named Preseason All-MEAC First Team and junior guard Demetria Frank also earned a spot on the Preseason All-MEAC second team.
Frank is leading the team in scoring and steals with 13.5 points and 2.9 steals per contest. Bolden is nearly averaging a double-double, with 9.4 points and 8.3 rebounds per game.
Bethune-Cookman is averaging 62.5 per game on offense, while its defense gives up 68.2 points a night. The Lady Wildcats are committing 19.7 turnovers a game, while forcing 19.0 turnovers a contest.
