Box Score

HAMPTON, Va. -- The Hampton University women's basketball teams made it eight in a row against the Lady Aggies of North Carolina A&T 90-80 on Monday evening at the HU Convocation Center.

The Lady Pirates (14-10, 9-3 MEAC) fought hard the entire game and left everything on the court. Hampton led the whole entire second half. With two free throws made by Delia Brunson (Stone Mountain, Ga.) at the 9:13 mark, the Lady Pirates started a 15-4 run which ended with a jumper by Brunson at the 4:16 mark. A pair of 3-pointers and a jumper by the Lady Aggies' Jaqualya Berry helped them get within eight; however, that was the closest the Lady Aggies got before ultimately suffering their first conference loss.

There were ten lead changes in the first half and the score was tied six times. A 3-pointer by Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas) at the 10:21 of the first half put the Lady Pirates up by five (18-13). At the 7:08 mark, Ta'Wuana Cook made a 3-pointer to give the Lady Aggies a two-point lead (32-30). Sophomore Choicetta McMillian (Fairfield, Texas) hit a key 3-pointer in the late seconds of the first half to give the Lady Pirates the lead heading to the intermission.

The Lady Pirates were led in points and assists by sophomore sensation Bernadette Fortune (Virginia Beach, Va.) with 30 points and 11 assists – both career highs. McMillian had a career high with 18 points, while Jenkins had 17 points, a team-high eight rebounds and four assists.

“The first time we just didn't play well, this game we executed by hitting shots and making the extra pass to the open players ,“ said Fortune. “This game was real important, because in order to win the MEAC (tournament), we know we had to beat (the Lady Aggies). We used the pick and roll to our advantage by driving for a layup or dishes to a big man.” This was the first time the Lady Pirates have scored 90 points in a game since Feb. 6, 2003, when they beat UMES 93-64.

This was also the first time Lady Pirates beat North Carolina A&T since March 3, 2008 -- 85-84 at the HU Convocation Center.

The Lady Pirates were scorching the nets shooting season-highs from the floor (52.6 percent) and 3-point line (58.8 percent).

The Lady Pirates were very unselfish, with a season team-high of 20 assists Monday night.

The Lady Aggies were led by reigning MEAC Player of the Week Jaleesa Sams, who had 28 points and 10 rebounds.

The Lady Pirates will return to action on Saturday, when they face the Lady Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman at 2 p.m. at the Memorial Center.
