HAMPTON, Va. -- The Hampton University women's basketball team (13-10, 8-3 MEAC) will return to action on Monday, when they face the Lady Aggies of North Carolina A&T (17-7, 11-0 MEAC) at 6 p.m. at the HU Convocation Center.
Hampton stretched its winning streak to seven against the Lady Spartans of Norfolk State with a 68-46 beating at the HU Convocation on Saturday evening.
The Lady Pirates were lead by the reigning MEAC Defensive Player of the Week
Quanneisha Perry (Decatur, Ga.), who had 11 points, 16 rebounds, and four steals; it was her ninth double-double of the year.
Choicetta McMillian (Fairfield, Texas), who tied a career-high in 3-pointers made with four, and
Bernadette Fortune (Virginia Beach, Va.) both had 14 points and four assists.
Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas) also contributed with 11 points.
Hampton forced 25 turnovers and scored 30 points off the Lady Spartans' mistakes. The Lady Pirates were big in the paint, scoring 32 points and collected 43 rebounds. The Lady Pirates shot 38.2 percent from the field; however, the Lady Spartans shot 40.5 percent.
The Lady Pirates are 19-11 all-time against North Carolina A&T, despite the fact that the Lady Aggies have won 10 of the last 11 meetings – including this season's first matchup. North Carolina A&T beat Hampton 82-81 in a thriller at the Corbett Sports Center. Hampton lost the first three meetings between the schools, beginning in 1995 with a 58-45 home loss, before rattling off 16 straight wins. Hampton has not beaten North Carolina A&T since March 3, 2008, when the Lady Pirates won 85-84 at the HU Convocation Center. Hampton is 9-4 all-time against the Lady Aggies at the Convocation Center.
The Lady Aggies are coached by Patricia Cage-Bibbs. The defending MEAC champion Lady Aggies went 26-7 last season and 15-1 in conference play en route to an NCAA Tournament date with Florida State, falling 83-71 in the first round. North Carolina A&T was picked to again win the MEAC this season, and senior guard Ta'wuana Cook and junior guard/forward Jaleesa Sams were named to the Preseason All-MEAC First Team. Senior forward Lamona Smalley was named to the Preseason All-MEAC Second Team.
Cook is leading the team, and sits fourth in the MEAC, with 15.7 points per game, leading the Lady Aggies in scoring in 12 games this season, while Smalley is pouring in 10.3 points per contest to go along with a team-high 7.6 rebounds per night. Freshman Amber Calvin is averaging 10.5 and a team-high 3.0 assist per game.
The Lady Aggies are averaging 71.2 points per game on offense, while their defense also gives up 65.7 points a night. North Carolina A&T is out-rebounding its opponents by an average of 40.2-37.0 per contest.
