HAMPTON, Va. -- The Hampton University women's basketball team (12-10, 7-3 MEAC) will try to make it seven wins in a row against the Lady Spartans of Norfolk State (3-16, 0-10 MEAC) on Saturday at 4 p.m. at the HU Convocation Center.
The Lady Pirates made it six wins in a row against the Lady Rams of Winston-Salem State with a 67-26 win at the Clarence E. Gaines Center on Monday. The Lady Pirates were led in points by reigning MEAC Defensive Player of the Week
Quanneisha Perry and
Jericka Jenkins with 12 points apiece.
Choicetta McMillian had 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds off the bench.
Hampton only allowed the Lady Rams to shoot 17.6 percent from the floor, which is the season-low for an opponent. Plus, they only gave up eight in the second half, which is a new record for points allowed in one half.
The Lady Pirates also had a season-high in free-throw percentage at 91.7 percent, going 11-for-12 from the stripe. The Lady Pirates shot 32 percent from the 3-point line, while the Lady Rams shot 6.7 percent, which is a season-low for an opponent.
The Lady Pirates are 45-33 all-time against Norfolk State. Hampton has won the last four meetings against the Lady Spartans, including this year's 63-59 overtime win at Echols Hall on Jan.
The Lady Spartans are coached by Debra Clark. The Lady Spartans went 1-27 last season, finishing 11th in the MEAC with a 1-15 mark before falling to Hampton 68-49 in the first round of the MEAC Championships. Norfolk State was predicted to finish 11th in the MEAC.
Nine letterwinners from last season return, including redshirt-senior Tiffany McNair, juniors Raychele Payne and Danelle Tate and Evans. Evans was named to the 2009 MEAC All-Rookie Team after a very successful freshman campaign.
Whitney Long is leading the team in points with 11 per game. Batavia Owens is leading the team in rebounds averaging 5.7 per contest.
The Lady Spartans are averaging 56.4 points per game while allowing opponents are averaging 67.9 per contest. Norfolk State is shooting 36 percent each game and allowing their opponents to shoot 42 percent per game.
