LADY PIRATES LOOK TO RESUME WINNING WAYS AT RADFORD

RADFORD, Va. – The Hampton University women's basketball team will look to return to its winning ways on Monday, when the Lady Pirates head to the Dedmon Center to take on the Highlanders of Radford University at 7 p.m.

The Lady Pirates (1-4), in their second season under head coach David Six, dropped their fourth straight game on Saturday, when they lost to Jacksonville 49-42 at the HU Convocation Center. Senior forward Quanneisha Perry (Decatur, Ga.) led the Lady Pirates with 12 points, while junior forward Melanie Warner (Tallahassee, Fla.) added 10 points and a team-high 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season.

The Highlanders (2-2) broke a two-game losing streak on Friday, when they outlasted George Mason 63-56 in Fairfax, Va. Sophomore guard Da'Naria Erwin Spencer led Radford with 18 points – 13 of which came in the second half. Senior guard/forward Brooke McElroy recorded her first double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Hampton is 9-3 all-time against Radford, and has won five of the last six meetings. The Lady Pirates beat Radford 63-43 at the HU Convocation last season. The teams first met on Dec. 8, 1979, when Hampton won 77-66; in all, the Lady Pirates won the first three meetings between the two teams. The Lady Pirates are 3-2 all-time at Radford, but the Highlanders took the last meeting at the Dedmon Center in 2006 by a score of 62-54.

The Highlanders were picked to finish sixth in the Big South this season, coming off a 2009-10 season that saw Radford go 6-22 overall and 5-11 in conference play. Radford returns three starters and 11 letterwinners from last year's squad.

Through four games so far this season, Erwin Spencer leads the team in scoring with 12.0 points per game – the only Highlander to average in double figures. McElroy leads the team with 6.5 rebounds per game, while senior guard Denay Wood is pulling down 5.8 boards a contest.

Radford is scoring 52.5 points per game, while allowing opponents 56.2 points a contest.

So far this season, the Lady Pirates are 1-2 on the road, having defeated James Madison 69-64 in the first round of the Preseason WNIT before falling 76-64 at South Dakota State and 64-57 at Charlotte. Six is 7-9 on the road for his career as a head coach.
