HAMPTON, Va. – In their last home game of the season, The Hampton University Women's Basketball team (12-13, 8-5 MEAC) took their game to the big screen, as they were featured live on ESPNU on Monday . A team effort sent the Lady Pirates into overtime, but they fell short, 90-87 to the Lady Bears of Morgan State (16-9, 8-5 MEAC). This defeat ended Hampton's five-game winning streak.
A series of turnovers put the Lady Pirates in the hole the first half of the game. Committing 31 turnovers, they trailed by as many as 19 points in the first half. At the half, the Lady Pirates trailed by eight.
Behind the shooting of senior Ashlee Finley (Harrisburg, Pa.), Hampton was able to battle back in the second half of competition. Finley, who was 6-for-10 from the field, including 5-for-8 from the free throw line, also secured seven rebounds to go along with her team-high 17 points.
With about 10 minutes left in the game, two free throws by Sharella Leslie (Brooklyn, N.Y.) gave the Lady Pirates their first lead of the game. Leslie had 15 points, including the two points that sent the game into overtime.
Sophomore Quanneisha Perry (Decatur, Ga.) had another impressive night, posting yet another double-double for the season. Perry, who dropped 16 points, also led the team in rebounds with 21.
Perry and Leslie were not alone; freshman Bernadette Fortune (Virginia Beach, Va.) was in double figures with 10, as were freshman Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas) and Melanie Warner (Tallahassee, Fla.), who dropped 11 and 10, respectively.
Corin Adams was the leading scorer for the Lady Bears, posting 32. Brittany Dodson contributed 23 to the final score.
