Marcus Gladden is entering his first season as an assistant coach with the Hampton University football program, where he will serve as linebackers coach under first-year head coach Connell Maynor.
Gladden spent the 2013 season as the offensive line coach at Morgan State
Prior to joining the Bears, Gladden was offensive line coach at Fayetteville State University in 2011 and 2012. His line helped pave the way for All-CIAA running back Colon Bailey, Jr. Bailey finished the 2012 season with a career-high 1,015 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns on 178 carries. He became FSU’s first running back in almost two decades to gain over 1,000 yards in a season.
Since his playing days at East Carolina, Gladden has embarked on a rich and successful career as both an assistant football coach and a strength and conditioning coach in collegiate athletics.
Gladden served three years at North Carolina Central, where he was the special teams coordinator and running backs coach.
A native of Charlotte, N.C., Gladden joined the Eagles staff after two successful seasons (2006-07) as an assistant coach at Charleston Southern University. During his two years as secondary coach, the CSU defense amassed 29 interceptions, including a school record 18 picks in 2006.
Prior to Charleston Southern, Gladden held football coaching positions at Tennessee State (Defensive Backs/Tight Ends Coach, 2005), Reynolds High School in Winston-Salem, N.C. (Defensive Coordinator/Linebackers Coach, 2004), and Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College (Defensive Backs/Wide Receivers/Special Teams Coach, 2002-03).
He has also worked as strength and conditioning coach at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (2001-02), Head Strength Coach at Charleston Southern University, Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College and Reynolds High School, and an exercise and sports science intern at his alma mater East Carolina University.
As an undergraduate, Gladden spent two seasons at Garden City (Kan.) Community College, where he was a defensive back and all-American sprinter before transferring to ECU.
While in Greenville, N.C., he was a dual-sport letterwinner for the Pirates as a defensive back (1997-98) and an all-conference sprinter (1998-99), before graduating in 2000 with a degree in Exercise.
A native of Salisbury, N.C., has two children: Chance (8) and Morgan (13 weeks).
