Pirate Pointers
- Hampton will celebrate its 98th Homecoming when it faces off against No. 18 Monmouth on Oct. 24. A sellout crowd is expected.
- Hampton has posted a 59-37-1 record in Homecoming games since the Pirates whitewashed Virginia Union 25-0 on Nov. 29, 1928.
- After playing the first three home games at the City of Hampton's Darling Stadium, the Pirates return to Armstrong Stadium.
- Coach Van Malone's team played at Darling Stadium while the aging artificial turf and the track surrounding the field were replaced. Football practices were held at the City of Hampton's Gosnold's Hope Park which required daily bus trips to-and from the facility.
- The game will mark the first time that the team's 26 freshmen and 15 transfers (46 percent of the squad) will play a home football game on the Hampton University campus.
Scouting the Hawks
- Hampton welcomes No. 18 ranked Monmouth (5-2, 4-0) for Homecoming for the second straight season.
- The red-hot Hawks have won four straight contests but it hasn't been easy. The recent wins were at UAlbany (28-20), at Dartmouth (31-28), 41-40 over Towson and 42-21 at New Hampshire when Monmouth built leads by outscoring their opponents 90 of its 141 points in the first half.
- The potent offense is led by quarterback Frankie Weaver, who is passing for 233 ypg with 13 TDs and just four interceptions. The two-headed rushing attack features Kenny Smith Jr. (84.3 ypg) and Elijah Jennings (81.0 ypg).
- The defense is anchored by defensive back Jaeden Jones, who is tied for sixth in the CAA with 9.1 tpg and is second in the conference with a pair of interceptions.
- Offensive coordinator DJ Boldin has been forced to use three quarterbacks in seven games. Starter Jalen Woods suffered an injury on Sept. 12 against Bryant and has not been cleared to return. He completed 57.8 percent of his passes.
- Mobile Tre'Von Taylor throws for 111.9 ypg playing all seven games and starting the last four. True freshman Xavier Brookins has come off the bench the last three games and averages 97 ypg passing completing 52.5 percent of his passes.
- Taylor was 7-of-9 passing for 123 yards and two TDs while Brookins passed for 98 yards and rushed for 44 with a TD last week at Sacred Heart.
- Fifth-year Cam Sturdifen has recorded 64 tackles, fourth most in the CAA, and has two forced fumble to to lead the Pirate defense. Newcomers Qwae Willis (41 tackles), Anthony Hightower III (30) and Marcus Temond (33).
