Maryland Tops Pirates in First Power Four Match-Up

A week after posting a season-opening 45-0 victory over Virginia University-Lynchburg, the Pirates battled against the favored Terps falling 62-0. Maryland led 34-0 at halftime scoring on six of eight first half possessions. The Terps had 353 yards on offense while limiting the Pirates to 45 in the opening half.
Hampton's defense forced a three-and-out on Maryland's first possession of the game. But the Pirates were unable to mount a drive. Maryland's Dewan Williams dashed 94 yards along the sideline for a touchdown to put the Terps ahead 7-0 with 9:30 left in the first quarter. It was the second longest run in Terps history.
Faced with a fourth-and-34 situation backed up at their own 14-yard line, Brett Starling's punt traveled 55 yards but was returned to the Hampton 36. It took Maryland 1:47 to boost the lead to 14-0. Williams capped a five-play, 36-yard drive with an eight-yard scoring run out to pad the Terp's lead to 14-0 with 4:43 left in the opening period.
On Hampton's next possession, the Terps returned a Woods interception to the seven-yard line. But the Pirate defense held forcing a 26-yard field goal to make the score 17-0 with 1:28 left in the period.
Maryland struck first in the second quarter. The Pirate defense forced a 36-yard field goal with 12:32 left before halftime giving the Terps a 20-0 advantage. An Iverson Howard 11-yard TD run made it 27-0 in favor of the Terps with 5:54 to go in the second quarter. With six seconds left, Malik Wahsington connected with Abdul-Rahim Gladding for a 10-yard TD to move ahead 34-0 at intermission.
Maryland continued to roll in the third quarter tallying three touchdowns to go ahead 55-0. The Terps added a fourth quarter score to post a 62-0 win. The Terps dominated the statistics with 646 total yards to Hampton's 85.
Although Maryland was Hampton's first Power 4 opponent, it will not be the last. The Pirates will face Georgia Tech (2027) and Virginia (2029). In 2028, Hampton will take on FBS foe Old Dominion.
Hampton opens conference play next weekend when the Pirates entertain Bryant at Darling Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
