Hampton Ends Season With Loss to UNCW

WILMINGTON, N.C. (May 3, 2025) … The Hampton University softball team fell in its final game of the 2025 season to the UNCW Seahawks 9-8. While the Pirates trailed for most of the contest, HU tied up the game in the seventh inning. Down to their final out, UNCW produced the game-winning run.

Kylee Quinn gave the Pirates an early baserunner on a base knock to the outfield in the first frame. Quinn advanced to second during Leah Maduro's at-bat on a wild pitch. Mauro gave Coach Cat Tarvin's side the lead on a two-run homer. Her shot to right field was her third of the 2025 campaign.

Throughout the next two innings, UNCW jumped out to a four-run advantage. The Seahawks recorded two runs in the bottom of the first to tie the game at 2-2. UNCW brought in four runs in the next frame on only one hit. The Seahawks took advantage of two errors committed by the Pirates.

Hampton started to claw into UNCW's advantage in the top of the third. The Pirates had baserunners on first and second with no outs on the board. Quinn with her second hit of the day, drove in a run. While the Seahawks got an out on the play, Maduro brought in another run with a base hit to the outfield.

While UNCW regained its four-run lead in the bottom of the fourth, Hampton got the offense going in the final three innings. In the fifth stanza, the bases were full of Pirates. Meagan Ramos produced a two-RBI single to right field. In the final frame, freshman Camryn Hamilton came up clutch for Hampton. With bases loaded, she brought in two runs on a single up the middle, making 8-8.

UNCW threw the final punch in the bottom of the seventh. While the Pirates had given up two hits, HU was able to manufacture two outs. A walk loaded the bases for the Seahawks. UNCW walked off the contest with a single up the middle.
