Two Late Runs Propels Pirates Past Norfolk State 4-3

NORFOLK, Va. (April 15, 2025) … Coach Cat Tarvin's side defeated the Norfolk State Spartans 4-3 at the NSU Softball Field. Hampton recorded 12 hits and a season-high two home runs. The Pirates jumped out to a lead in the fifth but headed into the seventh trailing. Two late runs by Hampton's offense secured the victory for HU.

While Maduro had an early double to right field in the top of the first, NSU gained the early advantage. The Spartans began the frame by reaching first on a fielding error. With only one out on the board, Norfolk State had baserunners in scoring position. Hampton got the second out of the stanza but the Spartans made it 1-0.

The Pirates were able to tie up the contest during the next half-inning. Santrea Armstead homered to left center field. Armstead's solo shot was her first of the season and of her collegiate career. Norfolk State limited the damage done in the second and recorded three straight outs.

Hampton had a strong chance to take the advantage in the top of the third. With only one out, the Pirates had runners on first and second. While the Spartans caught a baserunner stealing, a walk and a single by freshman Cassidy Lee loaded the bases. A pop-up would leave the Pirate's runners stranded.

Another home run gave Hampton the lead in the top of the fifth. Leah Maduro's solo shot was her second of the season. While the Pirates hit into a double play, a walk and a base knock by Armstead kept the inning alive. The Spartan's pitcher tallied a strikeout to get out of the inning.

Norfolk State gained the advantage in the bottom of the sixth 3-2. Hampton's offense came up clutch again in the seventh inning. Kylie Hill with her second hit of the day drove in the tying run. Lee scored the game-winning run for the Pirates on a base knock to the outfield.
