HAMPTON, Va. (Jan. 10, 2024) … Hampton University men's basketball team hosts the Delaware Blue Hens. For the Pirates, Saturday afternoon's contest marks the second straight home contest for HU. The game between the Pirates and the Blue Hens marks the fourth meeting that both sides have been members of the Coastal Athletic Association. 

ABOUT THE SERIES

The series against Delaware began before Hampton joined the CAA. The first meeting happened during the 2009-10 season in Newark, Del. with the Blue Hens winning 55-52. The Pirates have defeated Delaware since becoming members of the conference. In Hampton's first season in the CAA, HU defeated the Blue Hens inside the Convocation Center 67-66. The Pirates win on Jan 26, 2023, was the last time both sides have squared off inside the Convocation Center. 

ABOUT HAMPTON 

The Pirates in their last time out fell to Campbell 66-55. Coach Ivan Thomas's side committed an uncharacteristic 17 turnovers against the Camels. Campbell was able to convert the Pirate's mistakes to 17 points. The Camels were able to pull away in the second half going 7-for-12 from beyond the arc. George Beale Jr. led Hampton in scoring (15) in his first career start as a Pirate. Prior to transferring to Hampton, Beale Jr. had only finished in double figures eight times. So far this season the Suffolk, Va. native, has scored 10 or more points on 10 separate occasions. 

Hampton continues to lead the conference in turnovers forced per game (14). In every game this season, the Pirates have forced at least 10 turnovers a contest. With HU forcing turnovers, Coach Thomas's side leads the conference in steals per game with eight. The Pirate's eight steals per contest is 86th in the country. While Beale Jr has attempted the 16th most three-pointers in the conference, the Junior has made 32 threes which ranks 10th in the CAA.

ABOUT DELAWARE

The Blue Hens began its conference road trip at North Carolina A&T. Delaware last Thursday defeated the Aggies 98-88. Both John Camden and Izaiah Pasha finished the contest with 20 or more points. Four of the five Blue Hens starters finished the game in double figures. Delaware is coached by Martin Ingelsby who is in his ninth season with the program. Coach Ingelsby has amassed a record of 140-124 over his nine seasons.
