Lady Pirates Return to Action at Powhatan Field

HAMPTON, Va. (Sept. 25, 2024) … Hampton University women's soccer returns home to Powhatan Field this Thursday afternoon against Delaware. Kickoff for the match is slated to begin at noon. 

Delaware leads the series short history 1-0 against the Lady Pirates. Prior to joining the Coastal Athletic Association, Hampton had never faced the Blue Hens. The first meeting between Hampton and Delaware was played on the road at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium. 

Last time out, the Lady Pirates fell to the Campbell Camels on Sept. 22, 7-0 in the first conference away match of the season. Through the first 10 minutes of the match, both offenses struggled to record a shot. Freshman Avery John made her third start in goal and finished the match with two saves. Ellen Van Caenegem led Hampton in shots producing two. Sophomores Keri Geter and Evan-Nichole Whitaker played the entire match.

So far this season freshman Nylah Jennings has been a key contributor for Hampton. In 10 matches this season the Bowie, Md. native, scored two goals, tallied two assists, and amassed six points. The Lady Pirates have the seventh-best scoring offense in the CAA averaging 1.7 goals per match. Sanaa Perry and Ellen Van Caenegem combined have scored seven goals during the 2024 campaign which 47 percent of the team's total goals scored. 

Delaware is coached by Kelly Lawrence who is in her second season with the program. Last season Coach Lawrence's Blue Hens posted a 2-3-7 record in the CAA. UD just missed the conference tournament by three points in the standings. Delaware began conference play last Sunday, Sept. 26, against Hofstra. The Blue Hens defeated the Pride in a close match 2-1. Ava Sallee struck first for UD in the 27th minute. Heading into the half, the match was all square at 1-1. With less than 10 minutes remaining, Maggie Groh scored the game-winning goal. 

Groh along with Caitlin St. Leger have been the Blue Hens' top offensive threats scoring two goals and producing an assist.  Kayla Burns has been Delaware's go-to goalkeeper. The Ruby, N.Y. native has started eight matches while making 30 saves. Burns with a 3-4-1 record has also posted a shutout.
