Lady Pirates Defeat Towson, 4-3 in the Final Contest of the 2024 Season

HAMPTON, Va. (May 4, 2024) … Hampton University ended the 2024 campaign on a high note defeating Towson 4-3. The Lady Pirates' win would be the series' first home win and first victory over the Tigers. Hampton through the first vie frames built a three-run advantage. While Towon challenged the Lady Pirates late, Coach Monique White's squad came out on top.

Towson struck first in the second jumping out to a one-run lead. After Hampton's bullpen issued a walk to start off the inning, TU brought in the run with a double to the outfield. The Lady Pirates did get out of the stanza producing three consecutive outs. In the bottom half of the frame, Hampton tied the contest at 1-1. HU was able to load the bases with only one out. While Taylor Ivey reached first on a fielder's choice, she brought the tying run in.

Senior Jordyn Scott had a solid outing for Hampton. Scott threw 5.2 innings tallying three strikeouts. The Manassas, Va. native on Senior Day only gave up one earned run. Her efforts on the mound picked up her sixth win as a Lady Pirate.

The long ball continued to be fruitful for the Lady Pirates offense. Early in the fourth Camryn Thompson got her first hit of the day on an infield single. Thompson would be thrown out on the next play, but Kylee Quin reached first safely. Carmynn Bonner cleared the bases on a home run to left field making it 3-1 in favor of Hampton.

Later on in the game, the Lady Pirates extended their lead. With two outs freshman Leah Maduro doubled to center field giving HU a runner in scoring position. Aitirhna Aiken's ball to the outfield brought in Maduro. However, the Alexandria, Va. native, was out at second trying to stretch the single into a double.

The Tigers started to mount a comeback in the top of the sixth. Towson took advantage of an error by Hampton gaining a baserunner with two outs. A triple to deep right field cut HU's lead down to two. The Lady Pirates went to their bullpen calling upon freshman arm Taryn Bennett. While a run scored during Bennett's first batter faced, she got HU out of the stanza.

Towson continued to put pressure on Hampton's defense in the final inning of the contest. With only one out, the tying run was at third base. Bennet picked up the second out of the frame with a strikeout. Aiken on a groundball hit to the shortstop she fielded it cleanly and made the throw to first securing the victory for the Lady Pirates on Senior Day.
