Hampton Softball Split Doubleheader with Charleston

HAMPTON, Va. (March 24, 2024) … Hampton University softball team split this afternoon's doubleheader against the Cougars of Charleston. In game one Charleston jumped out to an early and did not look back. The Cougars defeated the Lady Pirates 12-0 in five innings. However, Coach Monique White's squad bounced back in game two.  With 11 hits, HU would defeat Charleston 8-3.

Game One

The Cougars jumped out to an early advantage scoring two runs in the first innings. While Hampton's bullpen only gave up one hit, they issued three walks in the first frame. Two more runs come across the plate for Charleston in the following inning. With the Lady Pirates committing two errors, the Cougars doubled their lead to 4-0. 

At the top of the third, Charleston's bats continued to produce. In the third inning alone the Cougars recorded four hits. Hampton's fielding mistakes helped keep the frame alive. With another five runs coming across the plate, HU heading in the bottom half of the third down 9-0. During the final three stanzas, the Lady Pirates only tallied one hit. Before Charleston recorded the final out three more runs would score. 

Game Two

Hampton was able to strike first producing two runs in the first fame. Carmynn Bonner reached third to start out the inning. The Cougars made an error allowing Bonner to stretch out the play. HU had runners on first and third since Brooke Williams drew a walk. With two outs on the board freshman Leah Maduro on a single to the outfield brought in the Lady Pirates' first run of the contest. Another run came across for HU on Maduro's steal. With the through going to second Williams scored putting Hampton up 2-0.

The Cougars bats started to produce in the half of the third. A hit-by-pitch gave Charleston an early base runner. Hampton committed a throwing error during the next at-bat advancing the runners to second and third. While the Lady Pirates picked up their second out of the inning one run would score. Back-to-back hits by the Cougars to the outfield, Charleston took the lead 3-2.

Hampton's offense found its rhythm once more in the bottom of the fifth. Camryn Thompson used her speed to stretch out a bunt to a single. Before the Cougars had a chance to record an out, HU tied it up 3-3. Williams with her second hit of the contest, put the Lady Pirates up by one. Maduro on another ball to the outfield regained the lead for Hampton. The Miami, Fla. native finished the contest with three hits and two RBIs. Before the end of the frame, two more runs came across putting HU up by three. 

The Lady Pirates scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. With Taryn Bennett keeping the Cougars bats quiet for 2.2 innings, she picked up her sixth win of the season. Hampton returns to action Friday against North Carolina A&T at 1:00 p.m.
