Hampton Softball Schedule Split Doubleheader With Quinnipiac

HAMPTON, Va. (March 13, 2024) … The Lady Pirates were back in action this afternoon against Quinnipiac. Hampton was able to take game one by a score of 13-5. HU tied a season-high in hits recording 14 in five innings. However, in the second contest of the doubleheader, the Lady Pirates fell in extra innings to the Bobcats 3-2.

Game One

Hampton's bats were able to get off to a quick start producing seven hits in the first frame. To start off the bottom of the first, Carmynn Bonner tallied a triple to the right side of center field. Bonnner would score the game's first run on a passed ball. Before Quinnipiac recorded an out HU had the advantage 4-0. Brooke Willimas Leah Maduron, Raven Jackson, and Bonner all drove in runs. With the Lady Pirates up by seven, the Bobcats made a pitching change before the end of the first inning.

Quinnipiac was able to get on the board in the third and fourth frames. With a run coming across in each inning, the Bobcats cut HU's lead down to five. In the bottom half of the fourth three more runs came across the plate. Taylor Ivey gave the Lady Pirates offense a jolt with a single to the outfield. With two outs Hampton had the bases loaded. Aitirhna Aiken tallied her second hit of the afternoon and brought in three runs. Heading into the fifth, Coach Monique White's squad was up 10-2.

The Bobcats bats started to produce once more during the fifth inning. QU began the inning with a leadoff single to the outfield. While a sacrifice bunt moved runners into scoring position, HU was able to produce two quick outs. However, a single through the right side and a double to outfield cut Hampton's advantage down to five.

To start off the bottom of the fifth, Cheyenne Crenshaw recorded her career-first hit. Bonner followed up the single with another hit driving in Crenshaw. While the Lady Pirates only had four hits in the frame, Quinnipiac committed two errors. The Bobcat's final error of the contest came during Leah Maduro's at-bat. With QU's infield misplaying the bunt, HU would go on to win game one 13-5.

Game Two

The Lady Pirates once again jumped out to an early advantage. Carmynn Bonner led off the bottom of the first with a single up the middle. While Taylor Ivey grounded out on the sacrifice bunt, Bonner was able to advance to second. During the next at-bat, sixth-year senior Janae Lyles produced a double making it 1-0. In the following frame, Hampton got on the board once more. Kylie Hill gave the Lady Pirates a late base runner reaching first on a walk.

Toward the end of the contest, Quinnipiac started to dig into HU's advantage. In the top of the fifth, the Bobcats made it a one-run game taking advantage of an error. While Quinnipiac's bats were silent most of the contest, QU produced three hits in the sixth. The Bobcats tallied back-to-back singles putting runners on first and second with one out. The next at-bat would bring in a run, but the Lady Pirates limited the damage dealt. With both teams unable to score in the seventh, the game headed into extra innings.

The Bobcats broke the tie late in the eighth frame. With a double deep to left field, Quinnipiac found themselves ahead 3-2. Hampton would be down to their last chance and advance the runner to third. With a superb defensive effort from the Bobcats, QU held on to take game two of the doubleheader.

Hampton returns to Coastal Athletic Association Action this Friday against the Hawks of Monmouth. Friday's contest will begin a three-game series with the Hawks.
