Pirates Second Half Surge Propel HU Past Campbell 72-68

Buies Creek, N.C. (Feb. 22, 2024) … Hampton University's men's basketball team picked up another win defeating Campbell 72-68. While the Pirates struggled from the field in the first half, HU shot 46 percent in the final 20 minutes. 55 percent of Hampton's points came from the paint or second chance opportunities. Jordan Nesbitt led the Pirates in scoring with 21 points.

The Pirates were able to get on the board first with a jumper from freshman Jerry Deng. Throughout the first half, Hampton was able to break Campbell's press with ease. While HU threw the first punch, the Camels responded with a 7-0 run. CU had a one-possession advantage entering the first media timeout. However, when play resumed Tedrick Wilcox Jr. went 3-3 from the free-throw line making it 8-7.

Campbell's top offensive threat Anthony Dell'Orso got off to a strong start. In the first 12 minutes of the contest, Dell'Orso had eight points. Both sides struggled to score for the majority of the first half. With less than eight minutes remaining in the first half, neither side was shooting over 30 percent from the field.

While the Camels had a six-point advantage, Coach Edward Joyner Jr.'s squad found a way to take the lead. The Pirate's offense started to find its rhythm in the closing minutes going on a 16-7 run. Hampton had only hit one shot from beyond the arc, but hit two threes in the final three minutes. HU on its final possession of the half found Tedrick Wilcox Jr. inside the paint for a layup beating the buzzer. Wilcox. Jr finished the first 20 minutes with seven points. Jordan Nesbitt would also have a solid half producing 12 points.

At the start of the second half, both Hampton and Campbell continued to trade blows. Coming out of the under eight-minute media timeout, the Pirates went on a 9-0 to take the largest lead of the contest 60-53. HU scoring throughout the second was a group effort with Wilcox Jr., Jordan Nesbitt, Jerry Deng, and Ja'Von Benson all hitting shots. Benson finished the game with 10 points and 14 rebounds securing his second double-double of the season.

With 3:27 remaining in the game, the Camels found a way to tie it up 61-61. Coach Joyner Jr.'s squad was able to maintain control by hitting free throws. Ford Cooper also came in clutch for Hampton down the stretch. The Charlotte, N.C. native, did his damage from inside the paint beating his defender off the dribble. Cooper finished the contest with eight points for HU while going 4-6 from the field.

The Pirates return to action this Saturday against Northeastern at noon. Saturday's game marks the first-ever road game for Hampton in the series' history.
