Box Score HAMPTON, Va. (Nov. 10, 2024) … The home season came to an end on Sunday for the Hampton University volleyball team as they fell in a tough contest to league leading Delaware 25-12, 27-25, 25-14 on Senior Day at Holland Hall.
Prior to the match, four seniors were recognized for their Hampton University careers in
Cortni Adams,
Kylah Hunter,
Madison Clark and
Shachia Lamb.
In the first set, an attack error evened the match at 4-4 before the Blue Hens went on 10-1 run to lead 14-5 after a Kirah Johnson kill. Hampton trimmed the deficit to 19-12 after a Delaware attack error, but the guests finished the first set with six straight points.
The second set was the wild one of the day as there were 16 ties and nine lead changes. Hampton scored the first two points on a pair of
Abena Asomani-Martin service aces. Delaware responded and held a 7-4 lead early, but Hampton scored four of the next five points to even the match at 8-8 following a pair of kills from Asomani-Martin.
The teams traded the lead for a bit as Cortini Adams had a kill to put Hampton up 18-16. Gha Whitefield-Moss closed a 5-1 burst for Delaware with a kill to push the guests up 21-19, but Hampton wasn't done and leveled the match at 22 following another service ace from Asomani-Martin.
Clark had a kill to give Hampton a 25-24 lead, but Delaware finished the set with three straight points and a Kirah Johnson kill wrapped that set up for the Blue Hens 27-25.
In the third set, a
Morgan Warren kill evened the set at 7-7. Delaware scored 13 of the next 14 to lead 20-9 after a Whitefield-Moss kill and went onto the 25-14 third set win.
Clark had eight kills and nine digs to lead Hampton, while
Brooklynn Patterson added seven kills and Asomani-Martin chipped in five kills, eight digs and four service aces. Johnson had 12 kills and Whitefield-Moss added 11 to lead Delaware.
Hampton closes the regular season next week visiting William & Mary for a match Friday night.
