Lady Pirates Hosts Norfolk State in Non-Conference Match

HAMPTON, Va. (Oct. 15, 2024) … Hampton volleyball returns home to Holland Hall for a non-conference match against rival Norfolk State. The Lady Pirates have already faced the Spartans this season. Coach Ronaldo Pacheco's side fell on the road to NSU 3-0. Wednesday night's match will begin at 6:00 p.m. and will be streamed on FloSports. 

In its last time out, Hampton fell to UNCW 3-0 in the first contest, and 3-1 in the second match. While the Lady Pirates dropped the first two sets, HU battled to take the third frame 25-18. Hampton started off strong taking seven of the first 10 points. UNCW shrunk the lead down to two at the 9-7 mark but the Lady Pirates preserved taking the next three points. In the closing moments of the third set, Cortini Adams was crucial for Coach Pacheco's side. The Senior tallied three kills and produced a block. Both Madison Clark and Maria Clara De Andrade finished the match with a team-high 10 kills. 

Clark leads the Lady Pirates in kills this season with 104 and is averaging 2.48 per set. Out of Hampton's freshman class, Brooklynn Patterson leads the way offensively with the fifth most kills (55) on the team. Senior Kylah Hunter continues to be an asset defensively for the Lady Pirates. The Mesquite, Texas native, has tallied a team-high 169 digs. 

The Spartans are coached by Kathy Bullock who is in her sixth season. Bullock has been a head coach for over 30 years while amassing over 400 victories. Norfolk State enters Wednesday's match with an 8-10 overall record and is 3-3 in the MEAC. In its last time out, the Spartans defeated Morgan State 3-2. 

Throughout the 2024 campaign, Coach Bullock's squad has been one of the better-serving teams in the country. NSU is averaging 1.84 assists which is the second most in the MEAC and 35th in the nation. Gabrielle Gilbert has tallied 31 aces this season ranking her 27th at the Division I level. Jasmine Mataira is close behind Gilbert with 24 aces and is ninth in the MEAC.
