Hampton’s Season High 12 Threes Secure 92-85 Victory over FGCU

ST THOMAS, V.I. (Nov. 18, 2023) … The Pirates picked up their first win in the Paradise Jam defeating Florida Gulf Coast 92-85. With Hampton shooting 67% from beyond the arc, HU led by 24 at the end of the half. With the Pirates shooting cooling off FGCU kept clawing at Hampton's advantage. HU was able to prevail with Ford Cooper and Tedrick Wilcox Jr. hitting their free throws late in the contest.

How it Happened

Hampton started the contest on an 8-2 run giving them the advantage early. During the opening minutes of the game, Tedrick Wilcox Jr. had five points. In the first half alone Wilcox Jr. produced 18 points while only missing one shot. Florida Gulf Coast would find a way to tie it up  15-15.

Coming out of the under-12 media timeout, the Pirates' offense started to catch fire. HU could not miss from beyond the arc hitting ten threes in the first half. Kyrese Mullen, Tristan Maxwell, and Tedrick Wilcox Jr. all were crucial for Hampton's superb shooting. Between the three of them, they would make nine of the Pirate's first-half three-pointers. With Maxwell shooting an efficient 50% from the field, he produced a season-high 22 points.

The Pirates closed out the half on a 30-8 run propelling them to take a commanding lead into the half. During this dominant stretch, HU only missed two shots. While at times this season, Hampton has struggled at the free throw line, Coach Edward Joyner Jr.'s squad shot 86% from the charity stripe.

Coming out the half the Pirates would maintain their 20-point plus lead. Joshua Lusane had a hot start to the second half producing five points in the span of a minute. Lusane finished the contest with 13 points and two blocks. However, Hampton's 57% shooting from the field would start to fade away.

With the Eagles going on a 17-5 run late in the second half, FGCU only trailed by ten. Florida Gulf Coast would cut it down to six but with only 11 seconds remaining. Hampton throughout the second half struggled from the free-throw line. With FGCU sending Cooper and  Wilcox Jr. to the line, HU only missed one free throw in the final minute.
