Lady Pirates Wrap Up Season in Loss Against Spartans

NORFOLK, Va. (Nov. 13, 2023) – The Lady Pirates fell to the Norfolk State Spartans in straight sets on Monday afternoon. The sets ended 22-25, 21-25 and 11-25.

Kristine Teivane led the Lady Pirates in kills (6), aces (3), blocks (2) and digs (12).

Madison Clark followed in kills with five and Maria Eduarda Rodrigues four. Kalyn Pierre tallied the most assists with 12 during the match and Nadja Bulatovic notched eight. Rodrigues had two aces, and Kylah Hunter one.

On the defensive side of the net, Hunter was next in digs with nine while teammate Clark recorded seven. Rickelle Williams and Tyller Williams each earned a block.

How It Happened

Set 1

The Lady Pirates jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first. The Spartans would instantly send an avalanche of seven straight points to go ahead 7-3. Hampton cut the lead to two at 8-10. Norfolk State extended their lead and closed out the set, despite the Lady Pirates taking seven out of the last nine 22-25. Hampton recorded six aces in the set.

Set 2

Hampton posted another good start in the second set, leading 6-2, 7-3 and 13-9. The Spartans then tied it up at 13. The teams went back and forth for multiple points as the score was still tied at 18. Cortni Adams gave the Lady Pirates the lead at 19-18 with a kill, only to be followed by three straight from the Spartans. Norfolk State grabbed the set 25-21.Teivane notched four kills in the set and five digs.

Set 3

The third set had the Lady Pirates up early again (3-1). Each team battled and Hampton trailed by one at 9-10. The Spartans took the next 11 points and put the set out of reach to win it 25-11. Teivane had nine receptions without any errors.
