HAMPTON, Va. –
Clara Smith had 10 kills, while
Gabby Calloway had eight and 10 digs as Hampton dropped a four-set match to N.C. A&T 25-19, 20-25, 25-7, 25-20 on Saturday afternoon.
Hampton held a lead early in the opening set and was up 15-13 after an attack error, but the Aggies ripped off the next seven points to lead 20-19 after a Naiya Sawtelle kill. A
Madison Clark kill for Hampton brought the Lady Pirates to 20-16 though they couldn't get closer than that the rest of the opening set.
In the second, Hampton came flying out racing to a 10-4 lead after an attack error. That advantage grew to 18-10 following another attack error by the Aggies. The guests trimmed the lead to 24-20 after a Fatimah Shabazz kill, but Smith responded with one of her own to give Hampton a 25-20 win in set two.
In the third set, the Aggies jumped out quickly racing to a 5-0 lead and cruised. The final set saw Hampton jump out to a 5-1 lead and lead 14-13 after a service error but the Aggies roared back with seven of the next eight points to lead 20-15 after a Sawtelle kill.
Margaret Daramola and
Nevena Santrac had six kills each, while
Brooklyn Irvin had 17 assists and five digs.
Jessica Pugh topped the team in digs with 19, while
Leanna Caldwell added 16.
Hampton returns to action next Friday night at UNC Asheville.
