SOFTBALL OPENS HOME SLATE BLASTING ROCKETS

HAMPTON, Va. – Kiaya Jeusi went 3-for-4 and drove in five runs as the Hampton Lady Pirates softball team opened their home schedule on Saturday with a 11-3 win over Toledo in the Pirate Classic.

Hampton (6-1) came out of the gates hot with a five-run first inning highlighted by a two-run double by Jeusi and a two-run single by Janae Lyles.  The opening run was scored on a double to center by Tiera Washington to score Jackie Gonzalez who opened with a single as Hampton busted out to a 5-0 lead.

The advantage grew to 7-0 in the second as Skylar Chavez opened with a walk and stole second before Jeusi blasted a two-run shot to center.

Toledo got their runs on the board courtesy of Morgan Paaverud who smoked a three-run home run to left field trimming the Hampton lead to 7-3 in the top of the third. Lyles followed in the home half of the inning with a leadoff home run to push the lead to 8-3.

Hampton scored a pair in the bottom of the fifth as with one out, Lyles singled to right and pinch-runner Casey Walker advanced to second on a passed ball.  After a walk to Lomax and both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch, Walker stole home.  Mo'ne Davis followed with a sacrifice fly to right scoring Lomax for a 10-3 lead.

The Lady Pirates ended the game in the sixth with two runs as Chavez reached on an error and advanced to second on a single by Washington.  Both runners stole a base and then Jeusi singled in Chavez to end the game via the run-rule.

Lyles was 3-for-3 with three runs driven in to join Jeusi and Washington who was 2-for-4 with two runs scored in the multi-hit club on Saturday.  Noelle Doan threw a complete game allowing five hits and striking out four to earn her fifth win on the year.

Hampton's originally scheduled second game against Sacred Heart was called due to the inclement weather that forced a 2.5-hour delay to start the day.

The Lady Pirates conclude the classic on Sunday hosting Hartford for a doubleheader starting at 10 am.
