LYNCHBURG, Va. – After a combined 39-point, 60 minute first quarter, the homestanding Liberty Flames pulled away from Hampton for a 62-27 win in front of just under 19,000 at Williams Stadium.
Following a pair of Liberty rushing touchdowns, Hampton got on the board with 4:26 left in the first as an
Ivan Oraha punt bounced off a Liberty player and into the end zone where
Damon Woodcock recovered for the first points of the night as Hampton trailed 13-6.
Deondre Francois found his connection with
Jadakis Bonds on a 28-yard scoring pass with 2:18 left in the first to bring the Pirates 20-12.
Hampton wouldn't get on the board again until the 11:57 mark of the third quarter when Francois connected with
Alec Dana on a 25-yard scoring pass to the back corner of the end zone as Hampton trailed 41-20.Â
They scored again with 10:05 remaining as Francois found Bonds again on a 53-yard scoring strike down the middle of the field as the Pirates trailed 55-27.
Francois was 19-of-25 for 288 yards and three touchdowns for Hampton, while Bonds caught half of that yardage total (144) on a career best eight receptions.
Defensively,
Oral Varcciann and
Tyler Frazier were the leading tacklers with six apiece. Varcciann had four solo stops, while Frazier had a tackle for loss.
Hampton is now off until October 5 when they open Big South Conference action against North Alabama at 2 pm inside Armstrong Stadium.
