HAMPTON, Va. – Despite a season-high 33 points from
Laren VanArsdale and a season-high 22 from
Kaylah Lupoe, the Hampton Lady Pirates dropped a 104-98 decision to High Point on Saturday.
In a game that saw nine ties and seven lead changes, a pair of
Charlisa Jenkins free throws with 38 seconds left in the first put Hampton up 29-27. High Point used a 13-4 run over a three-minute span late in the second quarter to take an eight-point lead on a jumper by Miya Bull with 43 seconds left.
The lead grew to 13 points with 56 seconds left in the third on a jumper by Bria Gibson, but Hampton chopped that to seven on a
Mahaley Holit 3-pointer with 39 seconds, followed by a VanArsdale free throw with seven seconds to get the lead to 80-71. On the inbounds pass,
Ashley Bates stole the ball and found VanArsdale for a layup to beat the horn and bring Hampton to 80-73.
High Point pushed the lead back to 12 on a layup by Gibson with 5:40 left and a 92-80 lead, but Hampton made a run. Hampton cut it to 94-91 on a VanArsdale 3-ball with 2:34 left, though High Point responded with a pair of Lindsey Edwards free throws and a Bull jumper with 1:46 left taking the lead back to 98-91.  A 3-point play by Lupoe with 16 seconds left brought Hampton to 102-98 to close the Lady Pirate scoring.
Joining the double figure club today was Bates with 17 and seven rebounds, while Holit added 14 and a career-best 12 assists.
