SOFTBALL WALKS OFF WITH TWO WINS MONDAY

HAMPTON, Va. – After a couple days of rain, Hampton University softball team was finally able to get onto the home field Monday and came away with a pair of walk-off wins to finish off the Pirate-Spartan Classic.

The opener saw Hampton score seven runs in the last three innings with a one-out bunt single by Ashley Grassini scoring Brianna Anderson for an 8-7 win over St. Bonaventure.  In the nightcap, a two-out single by Kennedy Hickey scored Anderson as Hampton defeated Central Connecticut State 5-4.

Game 1 – Hampton 8, St. Bonaventure 7
After giving up a pair of runs in the top of the first, Hampton scratched a run across without a hit in the second.   Janae Lyles and Ashley Grassini reached on errors, while pinch-runner Joya Greer scored on a throwing error on a steal of third.

The Bonnies scored two in the third, one in the fourth and two in the top of the fifth to lead 7-1 before Hampton got its first hit of the game.  Samyah Richardson got the first hit of the day for Hampton with a bunt single and went to second on a Hickey single.  Both runners advanced on a groundout and Richardson scored on a groundout by Casey Walker which moved Hickey to third.  DaSha Hill dropped a bunt single that scored Walker for a 7-3 deficit.  Taylor Warrick followed with a triple to score Hill as Hampton trailed 7-4.

In the sixth, Hampton scored two more as Richardson singled and stole second before Hickey tripled her in.  Kial Watts then scored Hickey with a sacrifice fly as Hampton cut the margin to 7-6.

The seventh saw one-out singles by Warrick and Anderson before Lyles singled up the middle to plate Warrick to even the game at 7-all.  Grassini followed with a bunt single to score Anderson for the win.

Allie Hotetz picked up the win in relief striking out five in five innings.  Warrick, Richardson and Hickey had two hits each as Hampton out-hit the Bonnies 10-7.

Game 2 – Hampton 5, Central Conn. St. 4
Much like game one, Hampton trailed 2-0 after the top of the second but pushed one across in its half of the inning as Richardson tripled and Hickey singled her in.   In the third, Hampton took the lead with a pair of runs as Warrick singled and advanced to second on a walk to Anderson.  Both moved up on a groundout before Grassini ripped a double to left giving Hampton a 3-2 lead.

The Blue Devils evened the game at 3-3 in the top of the fourth but Hampton responded with a run in the bottom of the sixth.  After walks to Richardson and Milloy, Watts struck again as a pinch-hitter scoring Richardson for a 4-3 advantage.

CCSU scratched a run in the top of the seventh, but Hampton pulled another walk-off moment in the bottom of the inning.  Anderson singled and advanced on a walk to Lyles before a walk to Richardson loaded the bases with two outs.  Hickey then took an 0-2 pitch to left for a single to score Anderson for the win.

Hickey was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Grassini also drove in a pair.  Allyson Babinsack took the win on the mound with six strikeouts in the complete game.

Hampton now will host the Pirate Invitational starting Friday hosting Delaware State.
