SOFTBALL OPENS WITH SPLIT AT ELON TOURNAMENT

ELON, N.C. – Hampton University softball opened their 2019 season on Friday by splitting a pair of games in the Elon Tournament falling 2-0 to Virginia and defeating N.C. Central 4-3.

Saturday's schedule has been adjusted due to the forecasted inclement weather.  Hampton will now just play Elon at 3pm.

In game two, Brianna Anderson opened the scoring with a two-out solo home run in the first for Hampton.  Former conference foe N.C. Central put up a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth but Hampton answered with two in the top of the fifth as with two outs Morgan Crawford walked and advanced to second on a fielding error.  DaSha Hill then singled in Samyah Richardson and Crawford to retake the lead at 3-2.

Hampton pushed another run across in the seventh as Kial Watts opened the inning reaching second on an error.  Joya Greer came into pinch run and went to third on a groundout before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Kennedy Hickey.

The Eagles got a run in the bottom of the seventh, but freshman Emily Workman struck out the last two batters to earn her first collegiate victory.  She had eight strikeouts with two walks and only allowing four hits in her debut.

Game one saw the Cavaliers strike for single runs in the fourth and sixth innings for the 2-0 win.  Janae Lyles had two hits for Hampton in game one.
