Â
The Short Story: Two overtimes weren't enough this Wednesday, as Hampton University women's soccer worked to a 1-1 tie with visiting High Point University in their first ever Big South Matchup.
Â
FIRST BIG SOUTH CONTEST
What a way to enter Big South Conference action for the soccer team taking on the preseason pick to win the conference and defending champion High Point. The Panthers won the conference last year and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
Â
BEHIND THE NUMBERS
- Maya Andrews made six saves in the first half and Rebekah Smetana had ten saves in the second and overtime periods.
- The Panthers led in corner kick opportunities 2-1.
- High Point kept the pressure on Hampton with a 17-4 advantage in shots on goal.
- Sydney Jackson's goal was her third penalty kick conversion this season.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a series of shot attempts by each team, Sydney Jackson would help the Lady Pirates score first as she drilled a penalty kick in the 18th minute. Jackson collected her third goal of the season.
- Off a feed from Kyle Levesque, High Point's Skyler Prillaman would put the Panthers on board as she pushed one into the net at the 86th minute to tie the game at 1-1.
- In the overtimes, each team had a couple opportunities to end the contest but failed. Alix Allen had a shot in the last 20 seconds of the first overtime that went wide for Hampton, while Sydney Allen went wide with her blast in the 107th minute.
Â
WHAT'S NEXT
The Lady Pirates have a quick turnaround as they return back to action, traveling to Rock Hill, SC to take on Winthrop University Saturday, Sept. 22 at 1:00pm.
