BEHIND THE NUMBERS
- The Lady Pirates had not been swept since August 30, a defeat to Tennessee Tech University.
- Hampton and Radford had faced off just once prior to Friday night, a 3-0 RU victory on September 10, 2016.
- Radford is only one of two Big South schools with a lone conference lost and remains a heavy favorite to win the league. The Highlanders are now a perfect 6-0 on the road.
- Megann Delgado was the lone Lady Pirate with double-digit kills, finishing with 11.
- Errors in the match were almost even. Radford took advantage of a defensive line that held HU to a .084 hitting percentage, countering with a .236 hitting margin of its own. The Highlanders also benefited from nine service aces.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Hampton looked like a team in search of an upset early in the first set, leading 6-4 behind three RU attack errors. The host sided-out though and scored six-straight points to go up 10-6, a lead they would maintain thanks to another 5-0 run later in the set.
- Hampton started the second set in similar fashion, leading 9-8 on a Kyndall Nicholas kill. An 8-1 Radford spurt put the second set out of reach once again as the host refused to surrender the lead.
- HU got within a point in the set, 24-23, scoring three straight on an error, Sasha Saric kill, and Lena Reed-Petracek ace, but an error closed out the RU win.
- Radford scored eight of the first nine points of the third set to control momentum. The hosts would lead the remainder of the set by at least four points to secure the conference win.
WHAT'S NEXT
Hampton will travel to Gardner-Webb University (6-12/0-5) on Friday, October 12 for a 7 p.m. Big South start. The contest will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
