HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Hampton University volleyball team dropped a pair of tight matches to close out the Tropical Smoothie Classic. They lost to the host Dukes 3-0 and fell 3-1 to Cornell.
Against JMU, who was a NCAA Tournament qualifying team in 2016,
Reeana Richardson had 13 kills and nine digs while
Kyndall Nicholas added 10 kills and Lena Reed-Petracek had 25 assists. In each game, the Pirates pulled to within two points late but the Dukes put together later flurries to take the 3-0 win.
In the finale against Cornell, the Pirates dropped a 3-1 decision. Richardson had 14 kills and seven digs, while Nicholas had 10 kills and six blocks. Petracek had 31 assists, while
Maja Petronijevic and
Lena Washington contributed 14 and 10 digs each. During the third set, Hampton trailed 17-12, but closed with a 13-5 run as a pair of Cornell attack errors gave Hampton its first set victory of the season.
The Pirates will next see action in Greenville, NC on Friday competing in the East Carolina Invitational.
