ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – Allyson Babinsack took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and the Hampton University softball team took advantage of three errors in a 4-0 win over North Carolina Central on Thursday to open the 2017 MEAC Softball Championship.
The Lady Pirates (23-20), the Northern Division's top seed, will play again at 7 p.m. against the Bethune-Cookman-Morgan State winner.
Hampton scored all four of its runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. After
Taylor Warrick led off the frame with a single and
Brianna Anderson reached on an error,
Kial Watts doubled to left center to score them both and give the Lady Pirates a 2-0 lead.
The third run of the inning came when
Jada Fields reached on a dropped fly ball; Fields later advanced to third on a passed ball before scoring on a sacrifice bunt to put Hampton up 4-0.
North Carolina Central's lone hit came with one out in the seventh inning, when Ryann Kostandin singled to left field.
Babinsack struck out three and did not issue a walk in picking up her 13
th win of the season.
Watts was 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs.
