SOFTBALL SWEEPS DOUBLEHEADER AT EASTERN SHORE

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The Hampton University softball team resumed conference play on Friday with a doubleheader sweep of Maryland Eastern Shore at Hawk Field, winning the first game 5-0 before taking the second game 3-2.

The Lady Pirates improved to 12-18 overall and 7-1 in MEAC play.

Hampton scored all five of its runs in the first game in the top of the sixth inning. Cassidy Blackwell got things started with a single to left, before Quierra Bradford brought her in with a two-run home run to center, her first of the year.

Ashley Grassini went back-to-back, hitting a solo shot to right, to give Hampton a 3-0 lead.

Jada Fields was then hit by a pitch, and Brianna Anderson singled, before MacKenzie Wise singled home Fields to give the Lady Pirates a 4-0 lead. Anderson then scored when Wise got caught in a rundown, putting Hampton up 5-0.

In the last two innings, MDES only managed one walk.

Fields was 2-for-2 at the plate, and Bradford led the way with two RBIs.

Allyson Babinsack struck out seven in picking up her seventh win of the season, scattering four hits in seven innings of work.

The Lady Pirates struck first in the top of the third inning of the second game; after Taylor Warrick singled and stole second, Blackwell singled her home to give Hampton a 1-0 lead.

Hampton tacked on another run in the top of the fifth, after Danielle Budden singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch and then scored on a single from Warrick. Anderson scored on a throwing error in the top of the sixth to give the Lady Pirates a 3-0 lead.

But the Hawks made a push in the bottom of the seventh; with two outs, Mackenzie Brown put MDES on the board with a solo shot to left center. Daeshia Jones then singled, before scoring on a double from Allison Anderson to cut the lead to 3-2.

But Sarah Maldonado popped out to end the threat and the game.

Warrick was 3-for-4 at the plate in the second game, and she and Blackwell each recorded an RBI.

Allie Hotetz picked up her fifth win of the season, striking out four and scattering five hits in seven innings.
