ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – The Hampton University softball team saw its season come to an end Friday morning with a 13-5, five-inning loss to Savannah State in the elimination bracket of the 2016 MEAC Championships at the Ormond Beach Complex.
The Lady Pirates, the No. 3 seed in the Northern Division, ended the season at 20-28.
Hampton struck first in the top of the first inning, loading the bases on walks to senior
Diamond Ponds and freshman
Hope Sobelewski, while junior
Danielle Budden reached on an error. Sophomore
Jada Fields then reached on an error, scoring Ponds and Budden to give Hampton a 2-0 lead.
But the Tigers responded in the bottom of the inning, taking advantage of an error, a hit batter, and three hits to push across six runs to take a 6-2 lead.
A two-run home run from Torrian Wright in the bottom of the second gave Savannah State an 8-2 lead, and a two-run single from Shelby Eccles later in the inning gave the Tigers a 10-2 lead.
Hampton got a run back in the top of the third; after Sobelewski doubled to left center field, senior
Taylor McCoy drove her in with a double down the right field line that cut the lead to 10-3.
The scoring continued in the top of the fourth; after singles from freshman
Daniella Milloy and Ponds put runners on first and second, Budden doubled down the left field line to bring them both in and cut Savannah State's lead to 10-5.
Hampton had two runners on again in the top of the fifth, but couldn't bring anyone around to score.
Two hit batters and a base hit allowed Savannah State to load the bases with one out in the bottom of the inning, before Antonette Smith reached on an error that cleared the bases and put the Tigers up 13-5 to end the game.
McCoy went 2-for-3 at the plate, while Budden had a team-high two RBIs.
Savannah State, the Southern Division's top seed, advanced in the elimination bracket.
