LACROSSE SET FOR FIRST VARSITY GAME AGAINST REDHAWKS

HAMPTON, Va. -- The Hampton University men's lacrosse team will make history on Saturday, hosting its inaugural varsity game at 12:30 p.m. at Armstrong Stadium against Div. II Roberts Wesleyan College.

Hampton will become the 70th NCAA Div. I program to have men's lacrosse, and Pirates are the first HBCU men's lacrosse program since Morgan State in 1981. Morgan State's program was at the Div. II level, making the Pirates the first HBCU to field a Div. I program.

The day will start with ESPN broadcasting SportsCenter on the Road from Armstrong Stadium, starting at 10 a.m. and running until noon. Fans are encouraged to bring warm clothes and can enter the field through Gate A starting at 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning.

The program will run on ESPN from 10-11 a.m., then on ESPN2 from 11 a.m. to noon.

The Pirates will be making their varsity debut under the direction of head coach Lloyd Carter, who was on that historic Morgan State squad known as "the Ten Bears." Carter is a lacrosse lifer, and he was also the coach of Hampton's club team.

Feature stories on the history of Hampton lacrosse and campus stories will be shown.

The game, which will not be broadcast on ESPN, will be free admission.
